As far as our dmen go this is what I see

Streit- keep solid veteran
AMac, schenn - immovable contracts
Coburn, Schultz, grossman - trade 2 of the 3 they will bring back value
MDZ - keep after trades and see how he fits

- Just5

I don't think Schenn has a bad contract. And if we are moving Grossmann then I would rather keep schenn. Younger and hasn't had the injury history. I still think Schenn can be solid on the third pair with the young dmen coming up. Also you move Schenn and Grossmann and you have really physicall defensman

Im hoping their just playing luke and praying he can make himself good enough to get traded for a late rounder, but it's looking like that's not a possibility

Anyone see when he neither stepped up nor backed off on a pinch and a 3 on 1 went back the other way? It was a real easy chip play for the yotes as Luke found no mans land, he wasn't even turned around by the time their forwards were at the red line. 3.6 for that crap he is not a piece moving forward

he is pretty raw

I would think, however, that most GMs give the coach input on lineup and that coaches, to some extent, likely have to justify lineup changes to the GM.

In other words, I doubt that Berube is making these lineup decisions in a vacuum.

- johndewar

I doubt it's a total vacuum, but I also doubt that Hextall is actively involved in the decisions. My guess is it's more Berube saying I think this is best & Hextall just backing him.

Have to figure Hextall's evaluating, as well. I'd give Berube full rope and judge him on how well the team responds.

nice article. so given salary cap issues moving forward do you keep a guy like Zepp to back up Mason for little over the league minimum or keep a guy like Emery for 1 million?

You have to figure there are comparable RH SAH dmen out there w/ way less term (and probably less cap-hit) to be had, though. I doubt Luke's 'upside' has much allure left. He's probably a pretty tough sell.
- Tomahawk

Free agency is pretty bleak and Schenn is only signed for this season and next, same as Grossmann. Not as if he's got 3 years left or some ridiculous amount fo time like Amac

I'd trade Emery at the TDL, for sure. Might as well give Zepp a longer look and if he's not the guy, there's good back ups in free agency that are cheap. Hell, if they want they can probably re-sign Emery after flipping him.

Guessing the specter of a stagnant cap could really throw things for a loop this TDL.

I think you could keep Zepp as a back up. I think you could move Emery to a playoff team wanting to have an insurance policy if something happened in the playoffs. Only problem is goalies rarly bring back any value in trades. Might be a very low round pick but at least it would be something. Then you could bring Zepp up and let Stolarz take on the majority of the work in the A

It could. But if Grossmann is moveable, Luke Schenn should be as well. Almost identical contracts, similar players.

Could well be more of a market for them next TDL, since then they're pending UFA

That's how I see it. If I could get anything for Emery, 4th or 5th rounder, I'd do it. Give him another shot at a Cup as a backup or spare goalie, add a pick to the stockpile, give Stolarz a bigger role in AHL, see if Zepp has the good to be a NHL back up.

And I say this as a big fan of Emery.

It's going to be awfully awkward at all of those "TRADE CENTRE" type shows up in Canada when there is absolutely nothing to talk about at the TDL.

I beleive Grssmann could be attractive to a western conference playoff team. He could give depth and size. The west seems to have a lot of bigger centers. Myabe like Kubina you get a 2nd and 3rd

Yeah. I am a big fan of a lot of the guys but I am a bigger Flyers fan. I think some tough descions have to be made to make this roster work. Moving guys like Coburn or Read or even Simmonds to reshape the roster.

I would even like to move MacDonald. I know somone on this site loves him but I think he skill set is replaceable for cheaper and pssibly on shorter term.

sorry if this has already been diuscussed but, whatever happened to Olivier Lauridsen's chances of cracking the lineup? shouldn't he be ready by now?

After Vinny, MacDonald is the contract I want to move the most. He's very average and his contract is awful value.

He has been passed over by others. I would be shocked if he is signed to a new deal.

They died. He's not likely in their future plans. The AHL games I have seen, he's looked very meh. Gets beat outside a lot and doesn't do enough to compensate for it.
