All of you were fawning over him last night during the 2nd intermission.

Can you imagine the poop he would have gotten in had the refs actually called him for penalties? He could have gotten a major and given the Flyers a 5 on 3 when he boarded Giroux. He also hooked Schenn and slashed his stick in half, which would have also led to a 5 on 3.

He's always been the same guy. Physically gifted, positionally unsound and lacks discipline.

By the end of one season, the media and fans would eat him alive here (no pun intended)

- PhillySportsGuy

The thing is, we have guys like Luke Schenn making the same mistakes Byfuglien made last night, providing none of the dynamic offensive ability.

If you're going to have a flawed guy, might as well have a guy with a strength that is elite in some area, rather than a flawed guy who is pretty mediocre when it comes to his strong points.

Exactly -- he'll get another chance, whether through injury or trade

I liked his game and wished he was playing, but TBH, I've got bigger worries than him right now. The Flyers are still alive, even though the math is inconvenient in a few areas, and I'm more hoping that this team can somehow pull together another few wins in a row, here

- AllInForFlyers

There are bigger worries than MDZ, but most of them are not correctable. MDZ can easily be inserted, improve the puck moving ability of the defense and help the transition game.

Not going to be able to trade for a top pair, all situations monster defenseman. But MDZ is a coach's decision away.

Don't give up strengths to get something flawed, though.

He'd easily be the best defenseman on the Flyers. That's pretty obvious. He's certainly not a guy I'd use as my team's anchor, but of course I'd take him.

Oh, absolutely agreed. I'm not interested in Byfuglien( or Yandle for that matter) because the cost is too high for the Flyers to consider. I like Byfuglien, but I'm not willing to cut off my leg to add him.

As usual, it's price dependent. If Byfuglien was 25, he'd be a lot more appealing. If he was a better two way player....if he was in better shape LOL

I wasn't fawning over him. By no means is he without warts. As Jsaq said, if you are going to have players with weaknesses, they might as well come with above average skills. Guys like L. Schenn, and MacDonald to name a few have glaring weaknesses, while doing nothing above average.

There's a couple people whose limbs I would gladly cut off to get Yandle or Big Fugly.

I'd definitely add him on a reasonable contract as a FA

Then why was Vinny sitting for so many games, while Umberger was still playing? Vinny has been around longer than RJ, and has a cup under his belt. So why was Vinny the first one to be sat down? Or, instead of Umberger, VdV? Or Coots when he was in his funk? According to that logic, Vinny should have had more leeway than any of those guys who still kept playing..

Again.. I stand by my opinion that Berube is inconsistent.. or bias.. whichever you want to call it.

- WarriorHockey21

Vinny, simply, does not have the pedigree that a player like Umberger has.

After all, Vinny never won a Stanley Cup, never won the Maurice Richard trophy, never played in or named captain in an all-star game, never named MVP of the Canadian team that won the World Cup, or played in the Olympics.

Umberger's career not only trumps that, but his play has been head and shoulders over Vinny's this year, statistically speaking of course.

I was fawning over him, I won't even lie. That dude was physically dominant last night -- Michael Raffl looked like he ran into a brick wall

I disagree.

I believe Byf-alo would make a great anchor.

I think one of the things that makes me weary is his (lack of) development as a defenseman. Can you honestly say he's a better defenseman now than he was when they first moved him to defense?

If I were trading for him, I wouldn't expect him to be any different than what he is now. He's a good player, but he'll always be the guy with HOF ability with all star level play.

I think his conditioning is fine -- he (frank)ed up in the OT, but that wasn't fatigue.

I don't think it's a crime to say, even though I'm a fan of the Flyers, that he was one of the best players on the ice last night by a good bit, until that OT sequence

Not saying he's worthless. He's a good player. Comparing him to the Flyers defenseman is like comparing a fine Italian restaurant to Denny's.

Yeah, I agree. If you deal for Byfuglien, you're not dealing for a guy that's going to be counted on to be better, it's a guy who is going to be what he is.

He was very good, until the third. Made a mistake on the first goal, but atoned for it.

He's a big skilled guy with a nasty side. His warts exist, but aren't fatal.

I see him in the same way I see JVR. He'd kill it in a skills competition and he's a good player in the game. You just watch him and leave wondering why he isn't better with the talent he has.

Little known fact.

The OT goal last night was the same set play the Flyers used to score the Stanley Cup game winning goal against the Sabres back in 1975.
