It's the same deal though, Morgan Rielly hasn't done anything to suggest he's going to be a #1 dman, is he talented, ABSOLUTELY, but it works both ways. You're dealing with potential when you're discussing these young guys.
Ryan O'Reilly at least has a 28 goal season as a 22 year old player, so I'd suggest his development is slightly futher along than Morgan Rielly's. Which is normal considering he plays forward and Morgan is a dman. They're only three years apart in age. - LeftCoaster
Rielly's potential is higher. And top paring defensmen don't come with trades. You have to draft one or overpay a poop load for one on the free agency market. |

The thought is that Gardiner has tons of skill, good vision and is an excellent skater and a change of scenery namely a different coach will elevate his game. Not saying I agree with this entirely but the skill and skating is there. - Mr_Smokey
Ya no question of his natural skill-set, that said, there's a reason Anaheim got rid of him to get Beauchemin back AND everyone is calling for Justin Schultz head in Edmonton.
They are more of a reason why you don't win that why you do win. |

The skill set is there. Not sure what the issue is. I think it's Carlyle trying to make him play to his weakness. Last year towards the end of the year when we played like poop he was by far our best defensmen. It seemed like he was playing his own way. - Santo_44
Same thing with Justin Schultz, not a (frank)ing clue in the d zone but when the coach lets him run he can create so much offense that it's worth looking over his flaws. A different coach might let him discover his game. |

O'Rielly is no more overvalued than every Leaf player by Leaf fans. - LeftCoaster
Does overvalue mean 'run out of town'? Because that's what Leaf fans look to do much more often than overvaluing. |

You don't know who's potential is higher, that's purely a 100% subjective statement...there in lies the problem.
I will agree that #1-2 defencemen are a lot harder to come by, but that has nothing to do with potential, that's a market value. |

I understand what Caryle is trying to do and that's making him better in his own end but he's not playing him to his strengths right now and it's not making him look good. It may be better in the long run for his development. |

Who knows what happens behind closed doors but that situation was broadcast as:
"We dont need Gardiner, we have Schultz"
then that was like... woops he didn't sign soooo
"We don't need Schultz we have Vatanen"
Regardless, Vatanen is playing well and it looks like it worked out for them but I personally don't think it was a calculated decision for them to move away from those players based on their skills/potential. |

It's safe to say Rielly has more potential to become the better player. |

Agreed. I doubt they drafted those guys to just to trade them away.

Gardiner isn't worth a young center, of any value anyways, have you seen him play? He may have loads of potential but the kid has no clue how to defend. - LeftCoaster
You finally said something remotely accurate. |

Maybe in the long run a la Stevie Y, force him to be defensively aware and let his offense go once he figures out the defensive side. Currently though it's hardly worth having these guys in the line up most nights. |

I don't agree...but I may look at it from a different perspective, "become a better player" is a very general term when you're talking about two guys who play completely different positions. |

He means Darryl Sittler and Larry Murphy, but you wouldn't have the knowledge or understanding of that; your MO is to deflect, which speaks to your lack of it.

It has long been thought that the Avalanche may move out Ryan O'Reilly, but according to multiple sources this morning there is a growing possibility and the team has "never been closer to pulling the trigger."
I was also told Toronto has had discussions once again regarding a multi-player deal, - Eklund

Darryl Sittler was not run out of town by the fans.

So are there any Leafs players that hold any value? Or at least close to the God that is 2/3rd line winger (as he is now) Ryan O'Reilly? |
