They should trade him cause he most likely wants to leave and will leave as a ufa if not traded.

Trading Hall could be as close to the Ron Francis trade disaster as we've seen in the modern NHL.

I dont think Neal and Hall are even remotely comparable - halls putting up elite numbers on Edmonton not playing with Malkin and Crosby.
- DirtyDozen

Yes but he still put in 40 goals in a season and his yearly goal scoring and point average are very similar to Halls. He was/is considered an elite goal scorer. Hall isn't having his finest season this year either which is why it doesn't make sense for the Oilers to trade him right now.

I get that he put up comparable numbers but i think you have to look at his linemates when evaluating him. Away from the Pens he has never put up those types of numbers (this year included) - and he was 26 when traded not 23. I honestly cant think of a close situation other than the Nash trade when trying to evaluate this - and even then nash was a bit older.

Hall has a ton of a talent, this isn't a knock on him...but I'm convinced that a team's most talented players need to be a center, not on the wing.

So happy that CBJ did not accept the "all our picks" for Ryan Murray trade.

I disagree. You need strong depth at center, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary that it be a centerman that drives the bus for a team.

Please stop comparing Neal (0.753 ppg) and Hall (0.897ppg)... it isn't even close despite what your stats say.

I agree. If you take a look at most of the Stanley Cup winners over any decade, most had an elite center or two.

Bobby Ryan is the better comparison for trade value, but Hall would command more bc he has good term and cap hit left on his contract

Id have to respectfully disagree with you there. On Dallas where he played a lot of second and third line minutes he had 24, 27, and 21 goals before he was traded. Very similar goal scoring numbers to Hall. He didn't rack up the assists but wingers generally dont when compared with centermen. How many other wingers of Crosby or Malkin hit the 40 goal mark?

from a boston perspective?

Boston perspective, I do this trade all day long and feel terrible for taking advantage of the oilers.

That being said, it wont happen. Krug isnt the d man the Oil need.

Id look at the James Neal trade for a comparison as to what the Oilers could expect to get for Hall(which isn't good enough to make it worth their while) Regardless of what people think about his on ice antics, James Neal is an elite goal scorer. He fetched a good winger and a middling to below average winger. A bad, bad return for a guy that is a sniper like Hall through and through. I think one issue is that wingers are the least difficult position to replace in the NHL. Elite Centers and top dmen are players rarely any team trades. An elite center can make even an average winger very good. Hall in all likelihood will not pull in an established top pairing dman. He probably wont pull in a very good second line center either, at least from a team that has a shot of winning the cup. In which case it's better for the Oilers to just hang on to him. He's still very young and they have decent prospects that could start a turn around in a couple of years.

I don't think it's the end-all-be-all of success, but if you look at most of the quality teams in the league they all either have strong depth down the middle or at least one really good center.

Im not saying Neal is a better player(he's not). But when you look at his goal scoring prowess and what he was traded for, or what Bobby Ryan brought back in a return, it probably wont be worth it for the Oilers to trade him.

Yep...and from what I understand part of the reason Neal was moved because they didn't like the guy. They were dealing from a position of weakness and still did a decent job on the return.
