Presumably, Kovy's rights are owned by the Devils, no?
- JohnScammo

I believe the way it went down is that he retired from the NHL, so if he comes back there's a provision where every team has to vote to agree to have him come back (not sure if it's gm or owners that vote, I can't remember) and if it's during the season I believe he would have to clear waivers. I don't believe he would have to during the summer.

Devils would not hold his rights as he retired and the contract is gone.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is what was discussed when he left

Well, here's what NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly had to say last summer after Kovalchuk retired from the Devils with 12 years and $77 million on his contract, and then went home to Russia and signed a four-year contract with the Kontinental Hockey League:

1. Unless Kovalchuk sits out a full season of professional hockey anywhere in the world, he cannot return to the NHL without consent from all 30 franchises until 2018-19.

2. If Kovalchuk sits out a full season of pro hockey, he can only return with the Devils’ consent until 2018-19.

3. Beginning in 2018-19, Kovalchuk will be 35, removed from the league’s voluntary retirement list and free to sign with any NHL team as a free agent.

In an email to the New York Post, Daly wrote Kovalchuk returning to the NHL “would require unanimous consent at any point at which the player tries to return to the League without having been out of professional hockey [anywhere in the world] for a full calendar year. Once he sits out for a full calendar year, he can only come back with the Devils’ consent.”

Ok, so it's probably unlikely. But hey...still worth inquiring.

Thanks for the explanation. Wow, did the Devils get screwed by Kovy!?!

Dare I mention the name of Yashin?

Yashin is (almost literally) 10x worse than Kovalchuk. Kovy's cap recapture penalty is due to his retirement and is fixed at $250,000 per year. Yashin's was a buyout and is ~$2.2M per year from whatever year it was we bought him out until the end of this season.

I think that ship has sailed. I'm pretty sure he's playing a checking line role for whatever too-many-consonants-in-the-name-team he's playing for now.

No way he would step right into the line up like he would have five yrs ago. If he didnt have an issue starting in bdgpt to cut his teeth I could see it happening and I wouldn't mind. Doesnt hurt.

He looked like a soft dough-boy back when he was drafted. Is there anything more risky than an apprehensive Russian mommas boy? Thank you, no.

Maybe, but keep in mind KHL scoring numbers are always a little lower because of the bigger ice.

My favorite thing about Petrov is the one summer he did come over here. He is supposed to be a Huge power forward. Meanwhile Joey Diamond from Long Beach buries him into the boards and seperates his shoulder. Joey is tough as nails but the kids is all of 5'2". We didnt' even get to see Petrov play in the orange and Blue scrimmage. (Joey scored 2 goals in the scrimmage. )

(I am from Long Beach and Bartended with Joey's Dad in my younger days. )
