Against a team with as great a transition as Chicago I would think his number one objective is to get the puck deep, especially when a guy named Toews is on the ice. I think he should have dumped and chased given who was on the ice.

That's not what's brought us success this year, though. If we just give in to them every time we go into the offensive zone, eventually they would beat us that way, too. This was a random slip-up. It wasn't that high-risk a manoeuvre for Johnny. Going back and looking at the clip, the Hawks were in big trouble if he hadn't slipped. Jooris was trailing and would have gotten the puck, and because the Hawks had double-teamed Johnny, it would have been a 3-on-1 going in. I have no problem with him trying to make that play, because we've seen time and time again that he can make it no problem.

For the most part I would agree...but it's still a lesson about what can happen after one little slip up.

1st year player, and thats one of his biggest issues. he seems to learn from those kind of lessons quick which is good

With things going so well I kind of don't mind them losing a few.

Keeps the young guys humble. Reminds management and fans that this is pretty much yr 2 of a rebuild.

who's not happy with this team'

I was listening to the radio after the game and it sounds like there was problems with the ice. Hartley said that the hawks were consistently changing their blades and the flames were noticing it off but couldnt do anything about it.

This is a random fluky slip up, but its still a learning experience as to what is the skilled play you typically would make and what is the safer play you should make...it's about recognition of what time it is in the game and who is on the ice...,he will learn and become better from it. I'm actually glad it was a skate issue and not a total brain cramp ...easier to get over and move forward

Easy to say after the fact. Let's say he doesn't slip and they score...

I agree just move on.

I totally agree and especially in Johnny's case. Dude is a high risk, high reward guy and if you ask him to go against his instinct you have a less effective player and we're back to the Sutter era.

I guarantee the coaching staff reviewed the game tape with him and showed him woulda, coulda, shoulda... If that mistake was made against the majority of teams in the league, meh, its likely not in the net. He's been everything we had hoped for and will likely make more mistakes. Better now than when we are competing and expected to be, for a playoff spot...
This team has shown what its capable of. We ended the season last year with the reputation of being the hardest working team in the NHL and its continued through this season. I'm thrilled with the Flames, a great time to be a fan of this franchise!!!

Derek Wills said on the fan 960 yesterday that on the plane ride after the game, he saw Burke make a point of going to sit and talk wit Gaudreau and over heard part of the conversation and telling, dont worry about it, just keep doing what you've been doing...

So that shows where Burke sits at least.

I'd love to know the dynamic of the management structure in the Flames front office. Like him or not Burke has a hockey sense and I'm sure it made JG feel a bit better... Now if Sven could feel that. Seriously though, I think they should do a parallel 24/7 show on both the Flames and Oilers...

Couldn't stand Burke......then he came to Calgary. The guy is solid. I like how he stands up for his players and he's heavily involved in the community. He was a solid hire by the Flames.

Really the only point I was trying to make is that he just needs to be aware of who is on the ice. Don't hold the kid back, but with the line that was on the ice that slip will cost you a goal most nights. Really I'm not even upset they've lost 5 in a row. They've been in each game. Even if they lose tonight I bet Henrick doesn't say it was an easy night

Gaudreau's a highly intelligent player. I have no doubt he will learn from this. It was an unfortunate incident that he likely hi a bad patch of ice and bailed and the rest of the team was attacking it him. As long as those plays are oat more successful than failure, i would want Johnny to keep doing it. Because like others on here mentioned, if he doesn't fall, he likely generates a top notch scoring opportunity.

Like i said, hes high risk high reward. Those types of things are going to happen again. But im enjoying that attack mentality way more than the sit back and wait crap we watched under tbe Sutters for so long.

Yea i like Burke cor those reasons also. I think hes well respected by his players and people around the league. UFA's will come here because of how Burke runs the organization. I do continue to worry somewhat of his old school approach to size and "beef." I thought when Feaster was still here, he would maintain the drafting and scouting and Burke could handle the trade dealing, because he doesn't get fleeced like Feaster has.

Completely agree. The entire organization seems to have really taken a step forward over the last five years or so as they've expanded into the sports entertainment company. Moving Ken King into a business role and bringing in Burke to run the hockey side of things was really smart. Seeing the way prospects like Gaudreu, Monahan, Jooris and even Sam Bennett through his injury have been nurtured speak volumes to the type of organization here. Fun being a Flames fan right now.

I think they've had him around the team a lot as well. Probably hanging out with Big Ern in the press box each night. I wonder there is a way to remove Big Ern from the roster and move him to a office role? Keep him with the young guys because he seems to be that great character that they feed off of but free up the roster spot. Would give him the opportunity to maybe work with the league on their substance abuse program.

Not sure how that would work with the cap. I know we are in tough to dump a salary.

Ya he's been around them a lot, going to video meetings etc. Should make his first year as a pro next year a much easier transition . There was an interview a week or so ago that said he'd be heading home for the holidays and returning in January. He also mentioned how much the other injured guys were hanging around him and helping him out, Stajan and Raymond in particular.

Edit:
This is most likely McGrats last year as a Flame, I could see him retiring and moving into some sort of office role. Hopefully the Flames find a position for him ....Anyone else see what he did for that kid that had a stroke, pretty good of him
