So if we get the 3rd pick, who needs a franchise defensemen?

Colorado, Philly, Dallas, Carolina come to mind that will most likely miss the playoffs.

3rd pick + for Duchene? Is that even possible?

I still hold that this team isn't deep enough to maintain this level of play, and that this is by far the best stretch of hockey you will see them play all season. However, it's looking more and more like it's going to be just enough to keep them out of the McEichel sweepstakes. It's going to be depressing. This team needs a franchise guy, preferably a center, to build around, and I have no idea where they are going to get it. It's not going to be another Boston, who is really the exception to the rule.

If they pick 4 and keep it, pick Zacha. If it's the 3rd (Hanifin), try to move it.

GO!

If it's pick 4, trade with a team that wants Kylington.

To be honest, this is what I expected but for them to start hot and cool off mid-season. Not begin to improve like this after being that putrid to start.

Ted has them playing his style hockey.

I think they finish up somewhere around where his 95/96 team finished.

I still don't see him as a player worth building a franchise around. You need one of those to win a championship. Zacha and Reinhart probably make this team really good, and "in the picture", but ultimately, I see them falling short.

Maybe, just maybe Girgensons is that "Franchise Center" just not your typical one?

I kind of feared that to be the case in the offseason as well, and then changed my tune in late October and early November. This team was simply bad, and didn't also looked poorly coached. It seems like there has been a bend but don't break system being implemented, and it's not breaking, not yet anyway.

Possibly. I'm not holding my breath, though. I think a guy like Girgensons needs to be your third best center in order to be a championship team.

This is my take. If we were to draft one of the top 2, you could etch the Sabres name on the Cup for sometime in the next 3-6 years.

Without one of them, they need to make some moves.

I don't think it's doom and gloom, but the road won't be as easy.

Montreal, LA, St. Louis, there are teams out there that will contend for the cup that don't have a top 3 pick playing center for them.

It can be done, and it has been done. You have to remember, we have the best prospect pool in the NHL, without including 3 1st round picks in this draft

And of those teams you've mentioned, only one of them has won a championship so far. There's no doubt in my mind that they can build a team good enough to be "in the conversation", but being in the conversation, like Montreal and St. Louis are, and being a true championship caliber team, are two different things. Without that top pick, the Sabres are in the former category.
