ya...+/- is a dumb stat - LetsGoIsles
It's an imperfect stat. Over the course of a game or even a few games, it is unreliable.
Over the long haul, it can be a useful stat, because some of the imperfections tend to even out over time.
For example, it is no coincidence that Brian Strait has the worst +/- on the team this season. |

So here is my dumb Theory. Feel free to kill me on this..
In my dealings with people from the Boston area in my work they have always had an insane loyalty to anyone from that area. I don't know how do describe it if you have not dealt with it firsthand. It's very frustrating to deal with if you are involved in it as an "outsider".
I bring this up b/c most of our Capuano issues with playing time over the past few years seem to be with Boston Area guys. Mattau, Strait, Pandolfo, Colin MCd.. are all from that area and our Coach seems to not let Reason get in the way of playing them in absurd situations or minutes. It is something I have noticed and just never bothered to mention in the past... but the Strait nonsense is just glaring. Anyway, I feel like it's a Boston thing with Strait which is why I don't want him an option for this moron to play. ever.. again. - niteislander
You speak of the Massachusettes Mafia. It is not a theory. It's a fact. Don't forget Humpty39 is a Mass native too and Dunham went to Maine, so..... You're not the first here to point that out. We have noticed the tendency as well. Starts with Gaath, who hired and continues to employ Cappy, who does his masters' bidding to the letter. |

Yeah. I love Brian Strait. Absolutely love the guy. PK or PP or even strength, I can never get enough Brian Strait. Since day one too. Five year contract? (frank) that. Make it 10 years.
I got a fever. And the prescription calls for more Brian Strait. |

I agree, and would even say it dates back to Mike Milbury, a Massachusetts native, who dumped Roberto Luongo, a Canadian, and got Rick DiPietro, another Mass. native, as his goalie of the future, and Garth Snow, a fellow New Englander, as his goalie of the present. Milbury hired another Mass. guy, Peter Laviolette, as his coach..............etc. |

You make a valid point. I would suggest that this sort of data over the course of one season is most useful comparing players on the same team. That would tend to eliminate variables such as a crappy goalie, because he would theoretically be crappy for all the skaters on the team.
To reiterate, it is an imperfect stat, but can be somewhat useful if used carefully.
