Good teams or not, 21+minutes is a high total for a defenseman, especially for a young defenseman.

Chris Stewart also had back to back 28 goal seasons. Should the Flyers trade Brayden Schenn for him now? Why pay top 4 defenseman prices when he wasn't a top 4 defensemen? How come Toronto didn't pay for JVR as a 20 goal scorer with 7 goals in 11 playoff games? Even at potential for potential the trade was a huge loss as L. Schenn was going to max out as a top notch defensive defenseman and JVR ceiling was that of a all star 1st line winger.

Lots of factors here that are missing. First of all, you're comparing a forward in Stewart, who is pretty much at his full development as a player, to a young defenseman who was 22 at the time of the deal. It's well known that defenseman normally take longer to develop.
Secondly, you're using hindsight in what the players have developed into at this point, and applying that to the time of the trade as if it was known how each player was going to turn out.
As far as the potential comparison you bring up, top defenseman, even top defensive defenseman, are more valuable players then wingers are. Wing is the least important position in Hockey.
The trade has not worked out to this point, and there isn't any signs of that swinging towards the Flyers direction. I understand why they made the trade. But personally, for me, the biggest issue is that the Flyers lost patience with JVR. And I think that was part of the reason for making the trade that was the biggest mistake. They need to be patient with young players.

Lastly, I've moved on. That trade is not going to ruin this teams future.
