Maybe other teams realize that he needs to be a top-9 (preferably 6) forward who needs to be paired with defensively sound players and don't have a fit for him at the NHL level.
- jmatchett383

Right, he can only succeed in a scoring line role but he isnt good enough to play in any teams top 6 or 9, apparently.

Players will clear waivers for different reasons. Obviously players like Umberger and Lecavalier would clear due to their productivity versus their contract. A player like Vandevelde is a depth AHL/NHL tweener, that every team has. I think there is a good chance that Rinaldo would be claimed.

But why would a player like Akeson, who is young and on a cheap contract, clear waivers? That is the question.

Teams are always on the look for young talent with potential, especially if the price is just the cost of a waiver claim.

Martin St Louis was undrafted, made peanuts, was exposed to an expansion draft (wasn't taken), had very few suitors in UFA before settling w/ Tampa, struggled in his first 6-weeks there until he "abandoned the changes to his game that his NHL coaches had impressed on him, trusting his own instincts" (aka just went full-O, (frank) D).

Not saying Arty is Marty, but I think we all know that oftentimes, NHL execs and coaches get the wrong read on certain kinds of players.

EKs blog has the Leafs considering a trade for VL.

Would you take Clarkson for him?

I think I wouldn't due to the higher hit and 2 extra years on the contract. Even if he can produce more I just can't stomach that contract. Even before he started playing terribly, no one thought that was a good contract.

Edit: Scratch that, he has looked pretty ok this season with 8 goals in 26 games.

i'd take clarkson but i would think there'd be some better deals out there for vinny

Yup. That would be it. That was unreal. If a coach did that today they would be suspended 5 games, and fined 100K probably.

At least he was a non-factor in game 7 of the ECF that year.

Martin St. Louis is not the only player in NHL history that was undrafted, waived, passed by, or whatever, and went on to success. NHL execs and coaches draft players with high draft picks that turn out as busts. Same with trading for players. None of this is news. And none of it means anything in terms of Akeson as a player.

We all also know that NHL execs and coaches also get it right a lot.

We can debate Akeson as a player to the cows come home. We all have differing opinions.

The bottom line is that Akeson has to continue to work, and play, and be ready for when the next opportunity presents itself. Whether it's with the Flyers or another team.

Apparently there are no deals available for VL

So now we have 2 No and 2 Yes on a VL for Clarkson trade, interesting.

Would producing say, 40-60 points be enough?

By the way, I disagree with the perception that Akeson can't handle himself well (enough) in various (other) aspects of the game to stay in the NHL. He saw some pretty stiff competition last season and did fine defensively while producing offensively.. and it's not like he was a sheiet show out there this season...sure he didn't produce but it's not like he made a lot mistakes or caused goals against or played inordinately bad in that miscast role.

- exlund

I'm not a huge proponent of the guy. But JC with how the seasons gone to date could we at least see him again with Coots and Read? Are we crazy as fans to think that it actually might work again? What the hell do we have to lose?

It's baffling to me, esp given Read and Coots struggles that they don't try to reunite a line that passed all the tests in last year's first round.

Yes, because he's not defensively adequate, on his own, for his offense to outweigh his defensive shortcomings. So if you put him in a top-9 role with players who can play well at both ends of the ice, he (seemingly) would have a role.

Sadly, in his 7 playoff games last year, he only played with Read and Couturier, who are known as terrible defensive players who have never contributed offensively at the NHL level in any capacity.

Same here.
