Give the dude a chance to earn a contract next year. His play wasn't such an eyesore that he doesn't at least deserve a shot. Compared to what Berube has been throwing out there? Where's the harm?

He actually played pretty solid overall, especially for a guy basically off the streets. Not as if he'd be taking ice time from Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque or Nick Lidstrom if he played.

The sad part is, I have to burn vacation time before 12-31 and I'm debating doing so tomorrow so I can watch the game.

He was honestly my favorite thing til I was in like 11th grade.

Wait...no...I think it was earlier than that...

Still though. I loved Pooh when I was little. Heffalumps and Woozles

I plan on it, after dinner.

Exam tomorrow at 10 though, so I can only have just one!

That's rough. Good luck. I'll either be at work miserable or home enjoying the vacation day they won't let me carry over

I didn't call him useless. If you want to have a discussion, let's stick to what I actually said. No need for invention.

My issue is not with how Berube has used him. Berube has used him in a primarily defensive role, because that has been his strength as a NHLer.

The trouble is, I don't feel Grossmann has performed very well in that role. If you disagree, fine. That's the basis of the disagreement. You seem to feel Grossmann has played fine.

I don't. And it's under that basis that I feel Grossmann should be held up to the same standards that the coach holds others up to, and scratch him when he plays poorly. Just like he's done to Schenn, Del Zotto and MacDonald. I'm not saying those players shouldn't be scratched, I'm simply saying that Grossmann-as well as Coburn-deserve to be held to the same level of accountability.

If Grossmann was playing the way he did from mid-February through the playoffs last season, I'd have zero issue with him playing while others are being scratched.

It's your opinion, I think he's played solid hockey, the guy blocks every shot within reach, bangs in the corners, reminds me of a modern day, "swedish" Moose Dupont.
I don't think he's a liability, he's a solid #5, or 6 guy, problem is he's asked to play higher due to the dearth, (there's a word I stumbled to find after 6 beers), of reliable defenseman we possess.

At least you get paid to play.

I was doing some reading this morning though...pretty sure saturday finals are unconstitutional. I'll have to bring it up to the provost

That's all it is, two opinions. It's all good.

At his best, Grossmann can be a good, solid stay at home physical guy that makes life miserable for opposing forwards. He did it last season, down the stretch and in the playoffs.

I'm also not saying he can't get back to that level-it was only 7-10 months ago. I just feel like he's not playing well now. I understand he's asked to assume a larger role than he normally would be, but that's true of everyone that Berube dresses on D

Here's the issue.

We say this phrase: "He's not a bad player. He needs to play his role though- that being a #4-6 guy. Right now, he's playing tough minutes above his head, and can't handle the matchups. He's being exploited. If he plays on a 3rd pair, and plays the right minutes, he'd be nice contributor."

How many Dmen on this corps do we say that with?

Schenn, Amac, Grossmann, and MDZ.

Now, let's use the same quote, but amend it: "He's not a bad player. He needs to play his role though...Right now, he's playing tough minutes above his head, and can't handle the matchups. He's being exploited. If he...plays the right minutes, he'd be nice contributor."

Welp, now add in Coburn and Streit.

That's every single (frank)ing player that makes up this defense, guys.

Agreed. It's a bad mix of players, although taken individually and used right they can be solid pieces.

That's why I'd be looking to sell a few of them off.

His puck moving ability, & quickness was missed from the back end, I guess he has to learn to pick his spots better, he was really tentative early in the season.

No doubt. This isn't the team that's going to take you deep in the playoffs. Everybody has to know that, from management to the coaches to the fans. So consider this one long, brutal preseason and almost everybody is on a tryout, either for the Flyers or for another team in trade. Moves need to be made, prospects and picks acquired, salary shed. It's gotta happen.

I would hope to get more for Schenn, as right handed defensemen have a somewhat higher premium.
