I am thinking of a taxonomy of tanking, with specific cynical reference to Flyers:
(a) low effort tanking - ask players to take it easy. Wrong at so many levels, including setting a horrible message to players for the future. Not considered further.
(b) financial tanking - not spend as much as financially possible for a year or two because it is best to suck it up those years and get higher picks. Too late for this strategy for the Flyers. Hextall slammed shut this door with very dubious contracts to Streit, Macdonald, and VLC.
(c) Trade tanking, with two parts:
(a) Trade to bring in deadwood. Flyers - achieved with Umberger, very good results so far.
(b) Trade away players who might be making the club better than it needs to be but are not part of the path to the promised land 2-3 years down. Flyers - did well there with trading Hartnell. But still untapped potential with Nick Schultz and perhaps Streit (and perhaps Raffl, Baby Schenn).
(d) Injury tanking: keep key players who are injured away as long as possible. Flyers - tried with Giroux, who short-circuited the plan. Well done with Coburn's mysteriously delayed return (they could not know he would make matters even worse when he returned)
(e) Coaching tanking: Hire/keep incompetent coach. Everything boils down to effort - constantly bench players, shake-up lines, bag skates etc. Flyers - bravo so far, fingers crossed.
(f) Personnel tanking: keep struggling/mediocre players in line up and with larger than justified minutes. Flyers - mixed results. Good with keeping on playing Rinaldo, Umberger, Vinny and so on till late. Bad: VLC should come back to lineup quickly and play left wing on Giroux line. Should not be lowering Umby minutes.
