Yes, because more likely than not, the team that acquires him has someone to slot with him.

Coburn's Robin, a very good one when he is on. There are some contending teams out there who, should they sustain even one injury, will be calling the Flyers. Because his contract is awesome and he skates extremely well.

Wait, are you talking about Coburn or Umberger?

If he does somehow turn everything around, I will purchase a hat and promptly eat it.

MINIMUM 20 GOALS

- BulliesPhan87

I was at the playoff game in 2009 when Carcillo scored. Right before that, I was bemoaning, "Oh great, we need a goal, let's put Carcillo out there." And my friend replied, "If he scores a goal, I will eat my hat. I will literally eat my hat." My friend tried, and failed, to eat his hat.

"This jersey will be accompanied by a Maple Leafs team letter."

Apparently it does.

I give him credit for scoring the goal -- he went to the net and got rewarded.

But it was on the PP. It still counts, but it's a PP.

Gotta drive play at ES -- hell, just don't get brutalized -- before I own any part of a sentence containing "I was wrong"

Just watched the replays from last one, and I must say: How has RJ Umberger not scored more goals this year? That may be the fanciest exhibition of playmaking and shooting I've ever witnessed. He obviously has the hands of Datsyuk and the sniping ability of Mike Bossy, both on full display on that goal. I think we're gonna see the floodgates open.
- jmatchett383

Oh yeah... Let's put him up on the first line he should boost the confidence of Jake and G

Ha! I'm not a Coburn hater -- I know what he is. It's not a crime to be a good complementary player.

Right now, I don't think it matters when. Even strength, power play, or penalty kill, any contributions we can get from him would be a boost. One step at a time.

I'm just joking. And yes, he is a good skater with size and could be a good compliment to a top player.

Sorry, that was 2009 Game 4 vs. Pittsburgh. Not game 3 (OT) vs. NJ in 2010.

So Coburn isn't a good defenseman, it's just that he's better then those stiffs? So some team will give up high value for him, because he's a better stiff?
- MJL

Well if a player is better than another they tend to get a better return. Plus he has an extra year on his contract. On a team with a Timonen-like top 3 guy to be paired with, Coburn can play ok. Paired with anyone on the Flyers is a different story.

I assume this is about Umberger? I agree 100%. Has to do it over a period of time, before he's out of it. He's never going to drive play at ES though.

Yeah -- I know how I sound about the guy. I actually don't hate him. I know that he wants to play better than this.

If he turns it around, I will be happy to say I was wrong. Because that will mean he is helping the team, and I wouldn't want anyone to play like that for an entire season.

I'm working midnights, so I didn't see the game last night. Just looked at the boxscore. Umberger actually scored last night? That buys him another 20 games!

It was a real beauty. Any living creature could have put it in the net, that's why I was a little shocked when a Zombie put it in

how would the backlash have been if he actually failed to pot that one while standing behind the goalie? he came within a few inches of missing the slam dunk.

i do feel bad for the guy.

So a team wants to give up a first round pick for a player that can play just okay! Seems like the better value would be to give up less for one of the lower rated stiffs.

Here is the bottom line. Coburn can fetch a quality return, because he's a quality defenseman. He is certainly not playing well now. But other teams know what kind of palyer he is. Which is why he would be in demand if the Flyers offered him at the deadline.
