Contradiction here. You make comments about Coburn as a player, and how he can't play better. And how his brain is part of his talent, and he can't play away from Timonen. And yet you expect to get that kind of value from another team for him? I would think you'd only get that kind of value if you were trading a pretty good defenseman.

and then you remember that doug murray as a rental got 2 seconds, and immediately begin to scrape the vomit off of yourself.

So you want to keep the tradition going?

Also, we all know that Berube would be leading this team to an 82-0 season if we could just get Coburn out of the lineup, seeing as he's the worst defenseman in NHL history.

So your argument is that we should get a coach whose teams constantly choke in that playoffs because Laviolette wasn't able to reproduce a magical, improbably Cup run from 9 seasons ago?

so you're argument is you don't have one because we had a stanley cup winning coach and still couldn't win

Just because a team drastically overpaid for a rental once doesn't mean it's a common occurrence.

No, my argument is that I don't think Todd McLellan is a good coach for a team that wants to win in the playoffs based on his track record.

Also, the 2 most recent Flyers coaches who actually did win a Stanley Cup, Mike Kennan and Peter Laviolette, got their Flyers teams deeper into the playoffs than McLellan's much more talented, star-laden teams have ever gotten.

It was an overpayment on Atlanta's behalf, despite what your deluded mind may think. But again, that's the exception as opposed to the norm.

true. doesnt mean ive gotten over it though.

although deadline deals sometimes capitalize on desperation.

i didnt see what the specific offer was, but if you guys are really looking to move coburn, i really dont think a first is out of the question.

Well, if Zhitnik comes out of retirement, it could happen again. Right now, it can't happen more than once since Zhitnik is no longer playing hockey.

I don't either. He's a fairly highly sought-after player who (despite one poster's delusional mind) plays a fairly good game when cast in the proper role. If you find a team in a desperate enough mode, he could definitely fetch a late first.

But still, that Douglas Murray deal was outright larceny on the part of San Jose.

Andrej Meszaros got a 3rd rd pick for Boston just last year. Robyn Regehr got 2 2nds from LA the year before. Even good franchises overpay at the deadline, not just Paul Holmgren.

Absolutely. But compared to Douglas Murray getting 2 2nd round picks, those deals are fantastic for Boston and LA. There's a difference between a slight overpayment and an outright steal.

i know sometimes teams want rentals solely for the sake of not having them on the books next year, but in coburns case, i think having an extra year at a reasonable rate would only increase his value.

if you take a western team that already has an established core, like the Kings or the Ducks, who really think extra defensive help could push them over the top, i could see coburn for their first being worth their while. Or if you take a team like San Jose of Dallas who thinks that he could be a vital piece to shore up a leaky defense and make the playoffs, i think they would have interest even at that price too.

for the record, i dont necessarily think that trading coburn is in the flyers best interest. but if youre truly in the (frank) it all everything must go mode, he isnt a piece that you need to beg someone to take just to purge yourself. he wont bring a weber esque haul, but he has considerable value.

NYI offered AMac (reportedly) $4M for 4 years. Not sure they're keen on $5M for 6 years.

I don't think Edmonton gets you the best return on Coburn if you're trading him this year. They likely want to hold onto their young players and prospects. The better idea may be to find a contender with some D missing at the TDL when you can create a bidding war, if you move him at all.

- jmatchett383

You're probably right, considering I'm not too keep on that length/amount of contract either. Only hope there would be Snow would get over zealous with a imminent playoff berth and make a rash decision, as he's done as recently as last year with Vanek. (Pipedream, I know!)

I also agree on Coby and I apply the same concept to all our Dmen. I wouldn't mind them moving any of them at the deadline to the highest bidder(s). As frustrating as our defense is as a corp, most of them would be good/effective 3-6 Dmen on contenders.

100 percent. youd be setting yourself up for disappointment setting that standard. shero was hell bent on acquiring that model of player, was extremely ALL IN NOW mode, and even then, still likely got fleeced by out bidding himself.

but as much of an outlier as it is, it still registers as a piece of data on the board, and bears at least some relevance when forecasting values and returns.

I think he could realistically fetch a 1st rounder and possibly a reclamation prospect from a playoff contender. Kinda like what Montreal gave up for Gomez.
