How many teams have won a cup the last ten years w/o a number one overall on their team?
A few kings teams
A duck team
Bruins
Canes?
Red wings

Just a thought

I'd rather have over achievers like girgens then some of the lazy first rd picks

Passing on him as a high first rounder doesn't equate to thinking he's never going to be great, especially with another year of development and real NHL time To consIder

Especially when you take into account that he was said to be a high risk/high reward pick if it worked out. So far, it looks like Devine knew he saw something pretty special. He was considered a project. Devine took a chance on him anyway. So far, so good IMO.

The Kings, Bruins, and Canes all had 2nd overall picks on their teams though.

While that's true, there is no evidence to suggest he's going to be a great player.

He obviously could turn out that way, he has a ton of talent, but he hasn't accomplished anything to suggest he should have been drafted earlier

What in the name of jeshiva Do you expect him to accomplish as a member of this team in the 17 months since he was taken in the draft??

That's my point...he hasn't done anything to suggest he's going to be great. Of the young players mentioned (Risto,Zads,Girgensons, and Reinhart) he would be the one I would consider using to get a great player.

He's not great and other GMs know it - by virtue of their passing on him last draft - but those same GMs will trade us a great player in exchange for him.

I understand your position.

Yes and misinterpreting it.

Never once said Zadorov straight up for a great player, but If we were to use one of them in a trade because of missing out on McEichel, Zadorov would be the one I personally would part with.

But you as GM would not trade any of our players you consider great - as you listed them. You just expect the other guy to do so, because we offer a great deal of not greatness.
Edit- time for me to go to bed. I'm off to big boy job in am.

All I'm saying is that IMO, Zadorov has the lowest ceiling of the four mentioned.

Just an opinion....that also doesn't mean other teams would agree

Wasn't saying it to put our guys down. I like what we have in the pipe, and if these last 7 games are any indication, the ones here already seem to be forming chemistry with one another.

I didn't think it was possible but In just 12 months the oilers have managed to out suck last years sabres.

Just for fun, (quickly) went through the first-overall's from '88 ton 2012. These are the ones who never won a Cup:

Sundin 1989
Owen Nolan, 1990
Lindros, 1991
Hamrlik, 1992
Alexander Daigle, 1993 (Ottawa's tank)
Jovocop, 1994
Berard, 1995
Chris Phillips, 1996
Jumbo Joe, 1997
Stephan, 1999

Including Dipietro in 2000:

Kovalchuk, 2001
Nash, 2002
Ovechkin, 2004
E. Johnson, 2006
Stamkos, 2008
Tavares, 2009

all those Edmonton picks

- Michael Pachla[/quote

#2 overalls who won the cup....Tyler Seguin, Drew Doughty, Jordan Staal, Evgeny Malkin, Eric Staal, ....

I feel like you're missing the point here. And that goes back to you calling Richards a complimentary player (a former #1C as a youngster who plays 2 way hockey a complimentary player? Lol.).... You're building a team. It doesn't matter how good the best forward on your team is. I'd rather have the 8, 9, 20, 22 best forward in the league on my team over the 1, 2, 80, 120 in my top 6... There's a reason PIT hasn't seen a cup in 7 years, no depth behind Crosby or Malkin.
- theblueandgold

I get your point...
But the reason Pitt hasn't won in the playoffs (except for last year) was that Fleury was an absolute train wreck in net

no, you pointed out 3 or 4 cup teams have a #2, and we got one
I was just trying to make a point that it's not doom and gloom if the sabres do not get a top 6 pick in this draft

pipeline is full, the cherry on top is if a few 4th-7th rd picks turn out to be diamonds in the rough

I am not sure the pens would have won any of the cups the last 5 years even if MAF was playing elite

The pens never seem to click as a team over the recent years when it counts.

Their bottom 6 has been brutal the last few years

The D seems to lack the grit needed

They could very well have the 2 best players in the games, but the team chemistry seems to be lacking

just my 2 cents
