Just go with Schultz and Del Zotto and get what you can for 1 or 2 other D-men. This team isn't winning a cup. I'm not talking about tanking, but try to get value for some players to make a run in 3-5 years.

We have (i) an irascible and impatient owner who keeps changing wives and wants to keep changing players/coaches (ii) A chronically impatient fan base (iii) no question of 'low effort tanking' (iv) a willingness to spend (no 'financial tanking') (v) a middle of the road team that seems destined to stay there given (i)-(iv).

In response, Hextall has (a) Signed Umberger - that financial commitment/deadwood combo alone should give us a draft place 5 places higher while youngsters mature. (b) Refused to make knee-jerk trades (c) Stuck to not rushing players from the Phantoms by and large (d) Has not signed (or had the ability to) free-agents just because they are available and (e) most importantly - refused to, and hopefully will refuse to -fire Berube.

Two years of pain, two years of very high draft picks, a buyout of 18, a bundling of VLC with prospect or a dropping of NTC to play somewhere than not at all, a purging of some players, a coach in a year with some semblance of brains, and this might turn out to be a watershed period for the Flyers.

Hextall is partly engaging in the 'doing nothing-tanking', and partly they are hemmed in by players and contracts. I wish the reality were otherwise, but given what it is, part of me sadly applauds Hextall's fortitude for letting matters continue.
