If Grossmann was on the third pairing getting 15 minutes a game it wouldn't bug me so much, but he's chained to Streit for some reason and the results are staggering.

Streit CF% with Grossman - 43.81
Streit CF% without Grossmann - 61.26

- Feanor

They're the 3rd-worst ES team in the league for a few reasons.

Grossmann's definitely one of 'em.

He's definitely not useless.

But if the goal is to get better at ES, having him in the top-4 is nothing short of shooting yourself in the foot. Meanwhile, a guy who can provide top-4 level play is sitting in the pressbox, for no apparent reason.

I wouldn't have sat Del Zotto either to be honest...

K - good to know what you value in your D. Yeah I can see why you hate Grossmann. If he tried that there'd be break aways on every one of his shifts. He's not fast enough to do that. So he usually doesn't. And tieing a man up on the board is his bread and butter. With just a little bit of support he stops the rush and sends us the other way. I think you need both kinds of D to be perfectly honest.
- FlyersGrace

I don't hate the guy, but I look at the league standings. Out of the top 10 teams, I can't find any one Defenseman any of those teams dress that is slower than Grossman or L Schenn. Maybe Engelland in Calgary is getting about 11 mins per?
I guess were at odds I don't think teams need this type of player anymore, at least ones this slow.

He's not going to make moves to make the team better short term at a longer term expense. He's come out and said this. He's preaching patience. I don't think he gave us any false impressions about what this team was going to look like this year. Last night the team looked like they haven't quit on their coach.
- Just5

Their coach does them no favors by continuing to dress the "versatile" RJ Umberger for no other reason than to provide cover for either his GM who made the awful trade or himself for running Hartnell out of town, a player who actually showed a little energy from time to time. But in their defense RJ's corpse is taking less penalties than Hartnell did so I guess we won that deal.

Does this include power play time? Streit is normally without Grossmann on the powerplay. Just curious.
- FlyersGrace

No, just ES time.

I can see the logic of sitting LSchenn ahead of Grossmann. LSchenn seems to be one the ice for a lot of great scoring chances for the other team.

Like fighters, defensive defensemen are trending out of the league. You don't need to score points but you need to skate and move the puck in transition.

I still have a soft spot for those guys though.

L Schenn takes too long to decide what to do with the puck most of the time, and then he gets stripped, throws it up the wall, behind the net, or a pass to nobody. And he's almost always stationary, as if a game on ice should be played while standing still.

It's not like he's behind a bunch of dudes who are dragging his #'s down, either: Giroux, Voracek, Coots, B Schenn are among his most frequent linemates. And when he hasn't been paired w/ Streit (which is almost always), he's been w/ AMac (who I keep hearing is a #3-quality puck-mover).

He's a (frank)ing black hole. They desperately need to re-think their top-4 alignment, or nothing is ever going to change.

No thanks to Yakupov. No need for another underachieving player. I would give them Hamburglar or VL in return

Berube is basically throwing darts. There isn't much method to the madness. The fact Umberger hasn't sat in the pressbox yet tells you everything you need to know.

Only the Oilers are playing worse hockey than the Flyers right now although both teams have 3 points in their last ten (EDM is 0-7-3 and PHI is 1-8-1). This has to be rock bottom.
