My issue isn't so much benching MDZ as it is not benching Grossmann or Coburn. Neither of them have played well lately, either.

Coburn has been the worst of the bunch by far IMO.

I just took a step back and realized just how depressing it is to read all the comments about how bad each and every player on the Flyers are. What have things come to in Flyerland??

lets hope the vinny scratch will result in him quitting....this is the only way he comes off the book. umberger should be sitting beside him. let them talk in the stands together and hopefully get a taste of how bad it feels to be watching. Chief did him a favor by doing it in the first game of a west coast swing. if he poops the bed again i say do it at a home game. whatever it takes to wake that big dummy up. warm up the bus

I wouldn't say by far. Grossmann and Streit have been really bad together

See, that's where I am

When you're a bad team, or playing poorly, and you are telling people that conditioning is important, and accountability is important, and no one cares who you are if you don't play the right way, then that's fine. You can do those things. I actually believe in those things.

But it's just empty words when guys get extended looks for no other reason than "who they are" and because they are "proven veterans" who fill a role

You can't preach accountability when you are scratching people who are not playing worse than other people -- I said that about scratching Schenn a week ago, and I'm saying it now

Because the players know. Nobody's blind out there -- Del Zotto's been the worst defenseman? Since when? When he was playing 25 minutes a night and playing well as of 10 days ago? He slipped from No. 1 defenseman to healthy scratch in 10 days?

No, he didn't -- and the players know that

Its really hard to evaluate honestly. It takes a pair to be good and it takes the forwards helping out as well. Coburn could be the 2nd coming of Christ but that wouldnt matter if the 4 other skaters playing with him are a bunch of Bozos.

I think thats managements plan....get a top pick and use it to trade for a later pick + a number one defender + ship out one of umberger or lecav

Good.

It's about time that:

1.) The Flyers were on the right side of such a scam.
2.) That Wyshynski was right about something, anything.

Especially on Saturday after we scored the 2nd goal and the Rangers realized they actually had to try.

I don't think that Ovechkin, Thornton, and Malkin are locks. I'd put them as probables, although Ovechkin and Malkin have time to change that. I don't think Hossa ever makes it because he was never "that guy." He was always second fiddle or lower, whether it was on Ottawa (Alfredsson), Atlanta (Kovalchuk), Pittsburgh (Crosby, Malkin), Detroit (Datsyuk, Zetterberg), or Chicago (Toews, Kane).

If we're counting Pronger, then he's a definite for me. If Shea Weber ever gets the hardware that is annually stolen from him, he would be a probable. He's also got time on his side a bit.

Patrick Kane is probably inching closes to a definite, as he may be the most explosive player in hockey. If I need a goal late in the game, I may want the puck on his stick.

It's not a bad list, but there's a few too many "very good" players for my liking. Gaborik, Havlat, and Timonen are all guys that any team would have liked in their primes, but they were never dominant enough for the HHOF.

- jmatchett383

Ovechkin (835 in 702 games) already has better numbers than Bure (779 points in 702 games) so unless some unforeseen event happens, he's a lock for 1200+ points and 600+ goals. I was on the fence about Malkin. I think Thornton has the numbers now and has the hardware as well. And I agree that I did get charitable with the "long shots" category but you never know.

Berube trusts Grossmann a ton, it seems. Coburn, too. That factors in, right or wrong.

See, that's the thing -- you can't have it both ways. That's how you lose players

You cannot preach accountability and have that (frank)ing sign up and not back it up

I get it -- Del Zotto's on a one-year, and he doesn't make much, and MacDonald's in the first year of a six-year deal. And everybody else except Schultz is on a multi-year contract

So, I'm not stupid. I get it. If that's how they want to play it, I get it

But it's unfortunate, because Del Zotto's been, at worst, their second-best defenseman this year. Maybe that makes him one of the tallest midgets, but the whole point of this thing has to be scratching players who can't play, not the players who have been performing

- AllInForFlyers

I don't get it.. you're paying everyone the same whether they suit up or not.. why not actually suit up the guys who are doing better? I don't give a damn how much someone is making... if they aren't doing well and deserving the time, they shouldn't get it. You pay Amac $5mil to play, and $5mil to sit in the box... you pay MDZ $1.3mil to play, and $1.3mil to sit.

I never got the whole 'he makes to much to be sitting' argument.

Believe me, I hate the argument, but we've all watched that league long enough to know that's how it works

MacDonald's rope is gonna be longer than Del Zotto or Schultz's. I hate that it is, but it is

Oh, without a doubt... and it's one of the things that constantly pisses me off... to see players getting $5+ million, doing horrible and actually HURTING the team, playing, instead of a $1million guy who is productive and hustles his @$$ off. It's always been that way, and it always will.

And sure.. if I'm the one writing the checks, I would WANT that $5mil guy in.. but most of all, I'd want to WIN.. at all costs... if that means Giroux sitting, so be it.. if it means Crosby sitting, so be it.. if it means Weber sitting... again, so be it.

But that's just me... and I guess why I work 9+ hour days, and I'm not a millionaire that owns a team..

Yup. That's something that scares me with Berube as coach as he has seemed to favor Grossmann even at his worst. Oh well, I want a top 5 pick.
