It's all very well celebrating Vinny getting benched, he certainly deserves it, but when his replacement is an AHL-player in VdV who's already -7 in very limited minutes, it's unlikely to help the team much.

Signing actual 3rd and 4th line players at 3rd or 4th line deals would still save you cap space.

Its an option that is looking more and more palatable even with the just over 4 million in dead cap space. Still better than the almost 10 million in "dead" cap space if you don't buy them out.

At this point, with the buyout talk regarding 40 and 18, it has to be a decision based on making sure you can get Voracek, Schenn, and Couturier re-signed. Umberger will have one year left when they're up for contracts, Lecavalier will have two.

The benefit of Berube benching them. Gets them closer to a buy-out, and takes away all hope the team has they can be productive. I think the ship has sailed on the notion they can trade those guys.

Not ideal, but it does save you over $1.61M on the cap. I'd hope they can replace him with a bottom-6 wing/center for that amount for the next 3 years. Maybe after this season, you could try Leier or Cousins in that spot.

it had to be done. As frustrating as it's been watching him trot 40 out there every night, it is understandable. At this point, you can't keep shuttling him around the line up and having him sulk whatever line he's on down, not with the decisive stretch ahead.

The only reason Couturier played a second in the AHL is the lockout.

In terms of his development, he's been non-linear, like a lot of young players. But he's always had good defense. That's been an issue, because he carries such a ridiculous load, it affects his mindset and approach.

Before making a trade, I think the Flyers need to split Couturier and Read, and stop relying so heavily on them for defense. I'd split them, and Giroux & Voracek up, and split the heavy defensive lifting that Couturier currently gets between him, Giroux and Laughton.

The reasons are two fold. First, it gives Couturier a lesser burden and more opportunity to build his confidence. I think that's his biggest issue right now. Second, we get to see how Laughton can handle a bigger defensive role. I know we're all busy fitting him for his halo, but he's yet to score and he's had fairly easy usage.

Splitting Giroux and Voracek can hopefully give them two lines capable of being dangerous. As much as they rely on that one line for offense, the need for secondary scoring is so bad they need to consider the split.

Even though it's the only thing working, the team isn't winning. It's like keeping a piece of poop car, because the stereo is awesome.

Not sure he's playing down... same as always, as far as I can tell. The expectations have just shot through the roof on him. Not that I feel sorry for him... (frank) him and his agent and Homer.

He was playing better before he got hurt than he has in the past several games. Just like Coburn, he has struggled after missing a month with a leg injury.
