Would still rather have him than VL. At least he was very friendly.

Agree with all of it. Williams knew how to hit, but couldn't teach it. I have no doubt that Berube understands and knows the game. And he has the experience of being a player. The question is, can he get his team to buy in, and get on the same page. When a team player to player, buys in, and is all on the same page, it's a beautiful thing. Right now, it seems as though every player is on their own separate page. It's his job to guide them and help them get it back.

I think this is the very definition of losing the room.

On a similar, but slightly different note, I like to bring up Ted Williams.

Perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, tried to coach, and sucked at it.

Like you said- coaching is about knowing how to coach, not necessarily having success in the game itself. (relative to other pros, of course)

Analogy: I consider myself a really good teacher. Other people do too. In fact, I have a lot of people asking me questions and asking me to explain things to them because I do so in a way that people actually remember and understand. People have said this to me.

Except I have to know what I'm talking about first. I have to study just as hard as them to teach them, because I need to know what I'm talking about to teach as effectively as I can/want to.

Tl;dr: To be a good coach, you need to understand the game and actually have the intangibles it takes to be a good coach in the first place. It's not one or the other.

FWIW, I highly recommend Leigh Montville's Ted Williams biography. Very well done.

Coburn's first full season, he scored 9 goals and 27 assists for 36 points. Pretty decent offensive numbers. The following season 7 goals and 21 assists. His offensive game dwindled from there. It seemed like he was coached to become less of a two way defenseman, to concentrate on becoming a defensive stay at home type. He had that ability when he was younger. Where did it go?

i don't think he has ever been the same after deflecting that malkin shot into his teeth

He also hasn't been the same since Terry Murray left for LA.

But Chief doesn't believe in ripping into the players because yelling solves nothing. So let's have the owner do it. I think it's far become a Coaching issue. In early December of 2009 we fired another coach who was kind of soft on the team. We ended up making the Stanley Cup Final that year.

Before I go to bed, I just want to say that although Timonen and Desjardins weren't defenseman who can control the play from the back end or dominate like Howe or Pronger, it doesn't mean Timonen and Desjardins weren't number one defensemen. They very much were.

With this said, Coburn isn't a number one defenseman but he's absolutely a solid number two, who is the perfect compliment to anyone he plays with on a top pairing.

Good Night.

No 4 and/or 5 part harmonies for you? Man. Even the percussion comes from someone's mouth.

Plus Kirstie is hot as hell.

Flipped on the Boston Anaheim game in time to see gagne score a goal for his 600th point in the NHL.

That was pretty cool.

Still love him
