No, but even if his rosters sucked, he wasn't exactly making chicken salad out of chicken poop, either.

Look up that roster.

They don't even boo. It's like they know it's coming
- PhillySportsGuy

I truly feel sorry for their fans -- they didn't choose to tank, and some of them on the boards are desperate for that franchise to start winning hockey games

Not making the playoffs. Not winning the Cup

Just winning hockey games

we're lunatics. you should read some of the stuff in my FB goalie group about gear. even now, at 42 i constantly tinker with my gear. my wife is all like "wtf is wrong with you?"
- hammarby31

Most of our goalies were the same way. I've known one "normal" goalie. Dude gave not a (frank) about anything.

That's about where I'd be -- yeah, it's sports, and yeah, it shouldn't matter that much

But yeah, it does matter -- just because there are 29 other teams doesn't mean you have to suck

- AllInForFlyers

might have been in 2000 or 2001...can't remember exactly, but around that time, and of course the flyers were really competitive then. it was torture. i was also a lot younger then, and i let the state of the team affect me much, more than i do now.

On a similar, but slightly different note, I like to bring up Ted Williams.

Perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, tried to coach, and sucked at it.

Like you said- coaching is about knowing how to coach, not necessarily having success in the game itself. (relative to other pros, of course)

Analogy: I consider myself a really good teacher. Other people do too. In fact, I have a lot of people asking me questions and asking me to explain things to them because I do so in a way that people actually remember and understand. People have said this to me.

Except I have to know what I'm talking about first. I have to study just as hard as them to teach them, because I need to know what I'm talking about to teach as effectively as I can/want to.

Tl;dr: To be a good coach, you need to understand the game and actually have the intangibles it takes to be a good coach in the first place. It's not one or the other.

- Giroux_Is_God

Agree with all of it. Williams knew how to hit, but couldn't teach it. I have no doubt that Berube understands and knows the game. And he has the experience of being a player. The question is, can he get his team to buy in, and get on the same page. When a team player to player, buys in, and is all on the same page, it's a beautiful thing. Right now, it seems as though every player is on their own separate page. It's his job to guide them and help them get it back.

It's nice to see other teams get (frank)ed

Being a Flyers fan has beaten any shred of empathy/sympathy I would otherwise feel for other franchises out of me

They all seem to love their players even though they continue to suck. It's like they've watched bad hockey for so long they don't know what good hockey is

We had one dude, he had a fetish about the knob of his stick. He'd "lose" his contact and while 6 guys are on our hands and knees, he's screwing around with a roll of tape.

Miraculously, the contact would end up in his beard or chinstrap and he'd continue with the game

HA! I remember the 07-08 season, after watching the horror show of the Season That Shall Not Be Named, and I expressly remember watching Daniel Briere and Simon Gagne convert a 2-on-1 to win a hockey game early, with Briere putting one under the bar

It was like I had found a water fountain in the Mojave

I remember they started that season in Western Canada. Briere got off to a great start. I think they chased Luongo in Vancouver too.

He absolutely did -- anyone who watched the sport knew he wasn't going to go all eight years of that contract, but you were just hoping he'd help them turn it around

He did what he was supposed to do for them, as long as he could do it, and they did turn it around. He was a good Flyer
