I was thinking he had a colored knee roll when he came over, now I see that he didn't, just the color on the outside of the leg. Still a fairly similar look from far away.

If Gretzky really had interest in continuing coaching, he could have. Do you remember who was on his rosters?
- SuperSchennBros

No, but even if his rosters sucked, he wasn't exactly making chicken salad out of chicken poop, either.

Some guy named Reider on the Coyotes. They were up 1-0 to start the PP too.
- PhillySportsGuy

Former Oiler prospect Reider...He forced a trade out of Edmonton. The Oilers got Kale Kessy, who seems to be an AHL third liner

I lose my poop when the Flyers go on a 1-7-1 run like they're on now -- can't even imagine what I'd be like if I had to watch that poop all the time

Ew. No way.

There really is nothing, within reason, I hate doing more than losing. It's the worst thing in the world.

I was that kid that put the second place medals/trophies in a drawer in my closet. (frank) losing.

- Giroux_Is_God

I don't root for the Flyers to lose. I just root for the teams below us in the standings to win.

Its only an island if you look at it from the water.

Coached or forced out of the role. In a short time came Matt Carle, Chris Pronger and Andrej Meszaros and from there never stood a chance. Meszaros could barely see PP time.
- SuperSchennBros

Good point. The Flyers added offensive minded defenseman, and Coburn's role changed.

Exactly -- sometimes, your favorite team isn't the best

But rooting for them to lose makes a person a pretty horrific fan, IMO

On a similar, but slightly different note, I like to bring up Ted Williams.

Perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, tried to coach, and sucked at it.

Like you said- coaching is about knowing how to coach, not necessarily having success in the game itself. (relative to other pros, of course)

Analogy: I consider myself a really good teacher. Other people do too. In fact, I have a lot of people asking me questions and asking me to explain things to them because I do so in a way that people actually remember and understand. People have said this to me.

Except I have to know what I'm talking about first. I have to study just as hard as them to teach them, because I need to know what I'm talking about to teach as effectively as I can/want to.

Tl;dr: To be a good coach, you need to understand the game and actually have the intangibles it takes to be a good coach in the first place. It's not one or the other.

You could prob get around all that by hanging a threatening sign up outside the locker room

i believe if the season had been a full season, they would have made it. they were trending in the right direction and narrowed in but ran out of time. i don't think this team would be performing any better under lava, but it would be interesting to see how he handled vinny/umberger/and the bubble 4th liners including akeson.
- hammarby31

Lecavalier signed here to play within Laviolette's system. It would have been nice to see if the signing was truly worth it under Laviolette. I'm not saying Lecavalier would be better but it would have been nice if we stayed the course a hell of a lot longer then three games.

It's nice to see other teams get (frank)ed

Being a Flyers fan has beaten any shred of empathy/sympathy I would otherwise feel for other franchises out of me

That's about where I'd be -- yeah, it's sports, and yeah, it shouldn't matter that much

But yeah, it does matter -- just because there are 29 other teams doesn't mean you have to suck

It's odd to me that we bring in specific guys for specific roles and then immediately change course. We probably could have seen better results from Andrej Meszaros if he saw consistent PP time when he was healthy. His bomb from the time point was wasted sitting the bench during PP opportunities.
