No one should've been scratched before the Dynamic Duo -- that's about where Berube lost me

most pads are on the blocky side these days. for some reason, emery uses the Brian's GNetik line - which is designed to be flexible, soft, and for the hybrid goalie, but his are modded to be more like their SubZero line which is a butterfly pad, stiffer, and with a single break in the outer roll, no internal break. it's odd.

They just look like they are so stiff that they effect his mobility

From 4-7 then 8-now. Fun fun!

Got a longggggggg road ahead

At least the flyers poopting the bed makes it easier for me to make the executive decision to skip games, if it comes to that

Still think Barber got screwed over, though -- still think Clarke needed to move players first

Clarke was right in that you can't always get rid of the players, but sometimes, you need to remind guys that they are employees

Boucher was the only one who got moved, and from how I understand the situation, he shouldn't have been alone

- AllInForFlyers

Maybe.

The point I'm trying to make is that it is silly to judge a coach based on the type of player he was.

John Tortorella played zero minutes in the NHL. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure he was good enough to play above the ECHL. Craig Berube had a better hockey playing career than John Tortorella. Claude Julien was practically a career minor leaguer.

A guy knows the game or he doesn't. What type of player he was isn't going to dictate that.

they are stiff. his old pads are the same. these just have the vintage graphics with the knee rolls and vertical stitch in the shin and thigh rise.

I am fairly neutral on Berube, tbh -- think he got dealt just as short a deck as Laviolette did, as far as roster composition

But it's also fair to say that neither of them has always made decisions that always make sense to any number of people

- AllInForFlyers

I believe the less talented award belongs to that 2012-13 roster.

Timonen, Schenn, Gervais, Foster, Huskins, Lauridsen and Gustafsson. Common!

Oh! Sorry -- and of course you are right. Mike Babcock's the best in the business, and he's not a former player with amazing credentials

I assume MacT has sold management on one more tank job so they can target McDavid. Their front office rivals the Phil's for cluelessness.

not exactly. mason's pads also don't have color in the knee rolls. and it's hard to tell if the dark color is actually their "bucky" material which is vintage brown or their new matte black, and the white is their off white/cream.

Exactly -- Laviolette got a short deck, then got the shiv because he couldn't take that roster to the playoffs in a short season, and they were still mad

Wayne Gretzky and Bill Barber.

Both immensely skilled. Both unsuccessful head coaches.

- johndewar

If Gretzky really had interest in continuing coaching, he could have. Do you remember who was on his rosters?

i believe if the season had been a full season, they would have made it. they were trending in the right direction and narrowed in but ran out of time. i don't think this team would be performing any better under lava, but it would be interesting to see how he handled vinny/umberger/and the bubble 4th liners including akeson.

On a similar, but slightly different note, I like to bring up Ted Williams.

Perhaps the greatest hitter of all time, tried to coach, and sucked at it.

Like you said- coaching is about knowing how to coach, not necessarily having success in the game itself. (relative to other pros, of course)

Analogy: I consider myself a really good teacher. Other people do too. In fact, I have a lot of people asking me questions and asking me to explain things to them because I do so in a way that people actually remember and understand. People have said this to me.

Except I have to know what I'm talking about first. I have to study just as hard as them to teach them, because I need to know what I'm talking about to teach as effectively as I can/want to.

Tl;dr: To be a good coach, you need to understand the game and actually have the intangibles it takes to be a good coach in the first place. It's not one or the other.

I was thinking he had a colored knee roll when he came over, now I see that he didn't, just the color on the outside of the leg. Still a fairly similar look from far away.

Ew. No way.

There really is nothing, within reason, I hate doing more than losing. It's the worst thing in the world.

I was that kid that put the second place medals/trophies in a drawer in my closet. (frank) losing.

Hard to tell with that team -- they were definitely on a run at the end of the season, but I wonder if that was because they were eliminated and teams weren't taking them seriously
