This.
I didn't understand not exploring other coaching options and I just don't think Chief is cut out for this

So if Berube gets fired, that's 3 coaches in 2 years for a team that has really struggled at times, and has very little confidence. I could really see that working out well. Are there any coaches out there that are great at working with a poopty roster?

MacDonald was scratched, and he makes 5M a year. So that's blows you theory of having a big salary out of the water. Rinaldo, even though he took a couple of penalties, comes to play every single game, and every single shift. Berube is right to not scratch him. You can't scratch every player, so regardless of who he chooses to scratch, it will be selective. It's selective by nature. And unless it's who the fans prefer, Berube will be criticized regardless of what he does. In the same way that he was criticized regardless of what lines he put together. This coach can't win in your eyes, no matter what he does. There's no objectivity whatsoever.

Voracek, Giroux, Del Zotto, and Streit are the only players actually pushing the play on this team. Recently, the line of Raffl/Laughton/Simmonds has been doing some of it, but the Couturier line and the fourth line are just killing penalties at even strength.

He needs to put the players he has, even if it's a bad roster, in the best spot to have success. He's not doing that. He's had some decent line combos, but some of his decisions are baffling.

Selective accountability, rewarding "effort" to the detriment of the team's ability to play effective hockey, puzzling decisions in terms of ice time and which players he takes pokes at in the media (criticism of a guy like Bellemare, while refusing to name Lecavalier & Umberger). It adds up to a guy who hasn't been effective.

Vinny had 5+ minutes of ice time today. Umberger and Vinny had two of the lowest TOI the last two games before today, where Umberger's went up while Vinny's went way down.

Really, Berube is screwed either way with this roster. There's dead weight, there's AHL guys giving effort and not being rewarded on the scoresheet, and then there's players who were pretty good last year but have caught the suck virus.

- feelingkettle

I'm not saying he has a good roster. I'm agreeing that the roster is bad. The players on it have not played very well. Guys who did well last season have been bad. No argument there at all.

The trouble is, it's not a sudden thing. Lecavalier and Umberger have been bad all year, for the most part. It took 20 games for them to see reduced roles, and in Umberger's case it lasted one game.

Luke Schenn had a rough go after returning from injury was responsible for a few goals against. He gets benched. Grossmann, Coburn struggle almost as badly, continue to play if they can skate. I was stunned that MacDonald was scratched. Huge props to Chief if it was his call and not an injury or illness. I want to see more of that.

Don't cut Vinny's minutes, scratch him. Don't reduce Umberger's minutes for a game, and then crank them back up 24 hours later. I'm not expecting Berube to turn this team into the 1976 Habs. But they should be more than a team in the hunt for McDavid and Eichel

So how do you convince someone to take vinny if all you do is play him 6 minutes a game and with guys like rinaldo?
- nails

Hextall [October] - "Chief, I know they're off to a bad start, but you gotta play Lecavalier and Umberger until they snap out of it. We need to be able to trade them."

Hextall [last week] - "It's a lost cause. Do what you gotta do."

I can only hope that this was the directive, and that Berube isn't so dense that it took a quarter of a season to start reducing their ice time.

Read/G/Jake
Raffl/Laughts/Simmonds
BSchenn/Couts/Bellemare
Umby/Vandevelde/Rinaldo

That's what I'd try right now.

I think Read has shown a little jump this last few games, and I'd split him and Couts. Playing with G and Jake may get him going.

I think BSchenn and Couts looked good when they played together.
Bellemare I think has the skill to play the two way game with them.

Vinnie as a 4th line RW is awful, he really should just sit.

The 4th line is bad but one could hope they could handle 6-7 minutes a game and pray. Really would like to see Leier called up and play him over VDV or Umby, but that may be for the Spring.

Seems likely to me. I have to imagine a coach would want to give guys like Vinny and Umberger a chance to get going before pulling the trigger on the benchings, scratchings, and ice times going down.

I don't think it's going to matter who's coaching the team this season if this kind of play is going to be the norm.

To some extent, yes.

He's done good things, too. It's not that it's all been terrible. I still like what others have said, that Berube eventually arrives at the right decision, just takes him 3 or 4 tries.

Who are your favorite draft prospects at the moment? Interested to hear your thoughts outside of the top guys like McDavid and Eichel.

Edit: And I really hate having to ask that in November

and unfortunately, I don't know that there is a better coach available, unless you count bylsma.
Now, you could wait for the sharks to hire bylsma.

No one is going to trade for anyone available on our team. You might be able to live with the forwards if you had a good Defense. Unfortunately, that is out biggest weakness.

There isn't, right now. That's why I'd keep Berube for the time being.

The only real options right now are Terry Murray, Dan Bylsma or Guy Boucher. I like Boucher, but him coming in right now doesn't change the course.

Isnt Boucher a trap guy? Uhh.

Far too much player turnover and coach turnover in the last while. The constant in that time, gets to reap the benefit of what he built.

I don't like Berube, but the time to fire him isn't now imo. Stay the course. If they fire Craig, Holmgren should be made coach. Let that fool lead the poop he built.

Boucher's a guy who has been an effective coach. He used the trap in Tampa, but had some success with a roster that didn't exactly look awe inspiring there.

I agree, now isn't the time to fire Berube.

What it adds up to is selective criticism. Not to mention baseless at times. Such as claiming that Rinaldo and Umberger shouldn't be on the PK. Rinaldo averages :42 a game on the PK, and has played a total of 15:36 of total PK ice time. In which the opposition has scored ZERO PP goals against when Rinaldo has been out on the PK. Hell, maybe Rinaldo should play more on the PK. Flyers have given up 20 PP goals on the Season, Umberger has been out for 6. Which pales in comparison to other players. So there is no basis for saying that either player shouldn't be out on the PK.
Same as criticism towards ice time, and how players are going to be used. Only thing that is consistent, is that Berube is going to be criticized by some, regardless of what he does. If he does A, he should of done B. And on and on. When that is the case, there isn't any credibility there, due to a complete lack of objectivity.
