Major changes have to happen IMO. None of it should include our young players. There has to be light.

If the deal is still on the table from EDM, 2 2nd's for Coburn. Take it and run with it. I worry how much will see highly effective mean Coburn now that he's in his 30's

Buyout Vinny and RJ this summer, no one is taking their contracts. Thats just under 4.5 mil in dead money on the cap. WHO CARES. Vinny is 4.5 in negative weight playing anyway. There is just nothing we can do with these guys.

I would also look to move L. Schenn for a 2nd or a 3rd or a forward prospect.

Buyout Vinny now....this summer. It doesnt make much sense to wait another year. His dead money is about 2.5 mil each year until 2018 either way. He is on the cap for another extra year at only 888k if we buy him out this summer. Its not that bad

I've been saying for a while that their window closed when Pronger went down. There's no replacing what he brought...with Richards and Carter having been traded for younger talent, and Pronger's subsequent injury leading to G being thrust into the role of a young captain, it basically reset the timeline for contention. There is some hope for the future with some assets on the farm/jr, especially on the D side (Sanheim, Ghost, Morin, Hagg)...we also have forwards in the system that should eventually be able to push some dead weight out of the lineup and help provide secondary scoring....also, who knows what pick we might end up with this season. I think in 2-3 years, when those players start having a real impact, the window of contention starts to open back up again and it should remain open for several years.

This is an interesting situation here for the Flyers. In the past the fans and the organization would not stand for mediocrity, for losing hockey, and moves would be made to solidify the lineup, to win more games and keep playoff hopes alive, many times this would come at the expense of losing picks and prospects...i.e., mortgaging the future...and with no Cups to show for it, was it always the wise move? But this year, will things be different? Will the new "patient" Hextall resist the pressure to make a "win now" move that costs youthful talent? Personally, I've been mentally prepared for this down period for some time now. While it will always be frustrating to see them lose, I will continue to watch, but will do so with more of a focus on the future than the current on ice product...so, for now the only changes I'd like to see is to try and phase out dead weight players who won't be (or shouldn't be) part of the future while retaining and obtaining as much younger talent and picks as possible. Also, I want to see them keep an eye open for coaching talent. I don't have much confidence in Berube and, at this point, I'm not sure the players do either. I'd honestly rather have Murray up...regardless, I think they should try to pursue an upgrade, indicate interest on Babcock, and any other quality NHL coaches that may become available.

There is a ridiculous amount of UFA Dmen available this summer that can bring the same type of game as the guys we employ now. If EDM is still in the running for Coburn, have to strike now. Look at all these freaking guys

Beauchimin, Visnovsky, Martin, Ehroff, Boychuk, Green, Franson, Oduya, Petry, Methot, Regehr, Sekera

fingers are getting pointed everywhere...what's going on in the dressing room?? Lindros botched things for brind'amour and desjardins. They thought Richards had some sinister, cult-like hold of the dressing room so they brought in pronger to keep an eye on him (turns out going for beers after a home game is kind of team bonding thing). They have guys like timmonnen and hartnell the past few years and things seem ok....now THEY'RE gone....who is taking charge in the dressing room? Giroux? He's too busy trying to keep the team afloat offensively. I thought Simmonds would be a good locker room guy; maybe coburn, streit, Amac...turns out I don't think so.

Nobody is holding anyone's play accountable! Any skirmmishes in prakky? These guys aren't even showing frustration! 10 years ago Emery would be coming in late to practice. 5 years ago he'd be slashing slackers during drills. Today I'm afraid he may be just too content to care.

This team is beginning to resemble the inconsistent train wreck that is the leafs. They give up three goals to Nashville, captain Dion gets in a fight to try to 'spark' the team and his teammates respond by scoring 2.....
.....and giving up 7 more. The don't listen him! They don't listen to Kessel! They don't listen to Lupul! Who do the flyers listen to in their locker room? Giroux? What's he telling them?

Who cares in there?????

They don't even have the cap room to take on a veteran contract even if they wanted to fix this with glue and bubble gum

I agree with the above. It's going to suck, the STH's will scream and cry and maybe attendance will go down. Something has to get done to build this thing the right way.

This is such a bad team. The Defense is what it is, but my god I didn't think street and amac, and grossman would be this bad. When this team plays physical it generates scoring chances. I don't know why they don't do this on a consistent basis, but whoever is at fault (coaches or players) need to go ASAP. Laughton is the future captain of this team. Why he wasn't up last year is unbelievable, and we sent Ghost back after he looked great, and now he has a torn mcl. Read needs to be traded, bc he will bring a decent return. Both Schenns can go as well
- CACannon18

Laughton the future captain. Based off what?

The Flyers are one less team to trade picks and sign one of these guys to an awesome long term cap effective contract. So there's that

This is a great post
Thanks for taking the time to write this out

I guess the best thing right now is to take the long term perspective

But I watch every night too and seasons like this and likely next are pretty (frank)ing hard to take
