so you like the Flyer D

No I'm saying they are not great, but don't make a trade that is going to make things worse.

JVR was traded for Schenn because the Flyers needed help on defense. The Flyers just have to suck at defense until the prospects get better.

Him and Forsberg must have bonded in 05-06.

Raffl back is huge. I can't wait to see the Raffl/Laughton/Simmonds line. These guys should be able to generate chances.

As far as the defense goes, my current thoughts are:

1-Coburn- Keep him, I still think he is their #1 defensemen, even as poorly as he has played since returning from the injury
2-Del Zotto- Keep him not only for this year but beyond. He and Streit are the only ones to provide consistent offense from the back end.
3-Streit- The only real veteran presence on defense who has some skill. He is key on the PP.
4-McDonald- He's steady and can eat some minutes. He's worth keeping around, basically because he does contribute and there is no way they could move his salary.
5-Grossman- He's needed because he's physical imposing like no one else on defense.
6-Schultz- He's exceeded expectations, but the bar was really low.
7-Schenn- Such a disappointment. He struggles to be a positive contributor on the team. This should be a reminder that trading for need usually makes for a bad deal.

I agree with everything you've posted but my issue isn't with one or two players. My issue is with the team as a collective group on the ice together. I like 90 to 95% of this team and I can see certain guys aren't playing well but as a unit, we're playing poor.

People are down on Vincent Lecavalier. There down on his skating, his contract, his production, his overall play. I can't argue with this. However, I understand why he was brought in. Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier were both having down seasons during the half season. Outside of Claude Giroux, there was no offensive production in 2012-13 and outside of Giroux, our centers couldn't win a faceoff. So enter Adam Hall and Vincent Lecavalier. It was a nice try but the long term effect now hurts.

The Luke Schenn deal on the other hand I've never understood. James van Riemsdyk was a young top line forward on the rise. The element Schenn brings, we already had in Grossmann. Fast forward to today, Luke might be a player of need moving forward. Grossmann is 30 years old and his body is unlikely to hold up. I don't see Grossmann part of the future plans of this team. Luke Schenn still can be. Not everything Schenn has done here has been negative from start to finish. Before picking up Pronger, Grossmann and Schenn, the only physical defenseman we were able to come across was Andrew Alberts. I don't believe Samuel Morin will come in and dominate physically alone. Until we upgrde over Luke Schenn long term, I would hang on to him.

So everyone roll this around their head.....

JVR was traded for a player who has been surpassed on the depth chart by Nick Schultz.

Let that sink in.

I thought the same thing.

I'm guessing Bill would know better than anyone as to the type of play you'd see there.

The Flyers have good defenseman. If you would add a true #1 to the current defense core, it would be a solid group. It's missing that one top minute all situations player.

I am excited that the Flyers get Raffl back but it sort of seems small compared to getting Dats back.

Nice to get to see him, I love watching him play. Not so great for the Flyers.

I'm not even sure I'd make changes for tonight. Outside of failed clears and penalties, I thought we were good the last two games. The Red Wings puck possession and stick handling is out of this world. I think I'd want seven defense against these guys and bring Raffl back Friday.

They played well against Minny and CLB. I thought they were bad vs Isles.

I think bringing back Raffl is fine, sooner the better.

He seems like one of the better skaters and possession guys.
Pretty excited seeing him and Laughts with Simmonds.
