They certainly do. Inconsistency being one of the biggest issues.
- MJL

Lack of execution. It compounds things, and when you are constantly turning pucks over (as it happened last night) you end up chasing. When you end up chasing you are out of position, exposed, and end up getting tired. Then you look like poop.

Sure but never a trade. It was just a slip up in using the freed cap space after buying out Briere. Briere was going to go. He needed to go.
- SuperSchennBros

I think just about everyone here agrees the team would be better off w/ neither on the payroll. Think OP was just saying he'd rather have not bought out Briere at all, than have the BO lead to Vinny.

Speaking specifically of last night, we did shutout a team that just beat Pittsburgh in back-to-backs with their starter in.

Just looking for some positives.

Someone tried to make that point last night.

This team is definitely better than that 2007 collection of misfits.

This team is a Cup contender compared to that team.

I said this team is one of the worst I have seen since 1968 and I have seen some bad teams

I was surprised when Crosby went into a scoring slump after his 5 assist night in Buffalo. 2 points (G, A) in his next 6 games but then 3 points last night. He'll probably score 20 points in his next 10 games.

I'd argue that Simmonds and Couturier are long-term pieces on this team, and that this team has a better prospect pool than those early-90s teams.

Those teams had, what, Zubrus and Prospal as guys who made some impact? Anything else?

Edit: Nevermind, they were picked after the LeClair deal. Renberg would be the only one in that case.

Edit edit: Therien, Prospal, and Niinimaa were the 3 best prospects prior to the LeClair deal.

I have no doubt that Hextall is working the phones. If a deal can be made, he will find it.

Briere had a 6 million dollar cap hit. The Flyers did the right thing.
- SuperSchennBros

The $1.5m cap savings per year really doesn't wow me when we have Vinny for another two more years. Obviously, the better choice would've been buying out Briere and not signing Vinny, but all else equal Briere's bought out contract would've been easier to swallow than Vinny's current contract.

Obviously, hindsight is 20/20.

Remember how bad the 06-07 team was with guys like Geoff Sanderson, and Kyle Calder?

Sanderson had 29 points in 58 games, and Calder had 21 points in 59 games.

Umberger wouldn't score 29 points this year if they played a 100 game schedule.

Still fine with Hartnell/Umberger, because I understood the cap logic behind it

And I also thought Umberger would be able to help -- I said it then, and I own that

But here's the thing: He can't help them. He's done. Columbus was right, Todd Richards was right. He's done.

What you can't do is compound the error -- and all managers make them -- by continuing to try to jump-start the player. You swallow hard and bite the bullet and make a move, now and in the summer.

Because the minutes he is giving them are empty, below-replacement level. You have to look pretty hard to insert a player who would be worse than him right now, and you just have to move on.

At some point, the money just doesn't matter.

The Flyers problem is that they have a multitude of problems. Its not just PK, or defense, or goalie... It depends on the night...

According to this, they do:

I would submit that Couturier Hell is a better name than all of those listed.

/waits for IT to ask why I googled "French Metal Bands"

- johndewar

I have never heard of any of those bands. But I do like some of these bands:

Especially Fairlyland and LoneWolf. Will have to check them out.

I hope they are able to move him or buy him out in the summer. But in the meantime, they probably CAN'T make a move. The only thing they could do would be the scratch him and call someone up, and I'm not sure they want to do that. But I will say I'd give Akeson another shot in the lineup right now over him if they use 7 D again.

Last night the lack of execution was so evident it was painful. By the 3rd period they had zero energy and even less intensity. Basically, if Giroux or Voracek wasn't on the ice, they were in their own end

This is quickly becoming a one line team. There is very little secondary scoring to speak of. If the Giroux line doesn't play very well, they have little chance to win.

TBH, I'm still a little stunned that Tavares or Nielsen, hell, anybody didn't manage to pot one -- they were in the Flyers' end so much, it was kinda tragic

Mason did everything a goaltender could possibly do, and IIRC, the defense did a good job clearing rebounds and containing players
