He also only had this year and next remaining, as opposed to this year and 3 more. - jmatchett383
So what. We bought him out risk free. It was never really Briere or Vinny. |

The only other way I can see one moving is if they were to trade a valuable asset (Coburn, Brayden Schenn) and tacked on Lecavalier or Umberger, accepting less, but losing the contract.
In other words, instead of trading Coburn for David Perron and a 2nd, maybe deal Coburn & Vinny for Perron alone...not ideal, but they lose a bad contract. - Jsaquella
That could happen, but I've resigned myself that they're just going to have these guys for the duration. |

problem is Hextall has inherited a bit of a mess with little means to rid himself of the problems......granted Umberger is his doing. of course that said I still do get wanting to get out of Hartnell's deal. in the past you could bury guys in the A but that doesn't even work anymore. the salary cap is definitely not our friend - nastyflyergirl
I have said it before... I realllly believe that they targeted Umberger and then traded Hartnell for him. Terrible idea. Trade Hartnell for a 5th.. sign Mason Raymond for a fraction of the term and cost... Done. |

Sure. However Umberger was just brought in exchange for Hartnell for the purpose of saving money and right now Umberger is a negative daily topic. Briere would be no different.
Why couldn't we just buyout Briere risk free and not sign Vinny? This mindset after the fact makes more sense to me. If kept Briere, we keep a 6 million dollar player who can't play anymore. - SuperSchennBros
Because Briere at $6 million for one more year is better than VLC at $4.5 million for 3 more years. |

Speaking specifically of last night, we did shutout a team that just beat Pittsburgh in back-to-backs with their starter in.
Just looking for some positives. - jmatchett383

How about one of Cassels/McCann, J. Eriksson, and a 1st for Coburn and a 3rd? - jmatchett383
And I think those are deals worht making if we have the pieces at the TDL. Paul Gaudstad got a 1st rounder. Teams going into the playoffs will pay if they think that player could push them closer to the cup.
With Voynov out would the Kings move Kempe or Zykov and picks for Coburn?
Those are the deals that can help bring skill to the flyers. |

Absolutely, and really, the rule of thumb to making the playoffs is getting road points -- it wasn't pretty, but they got one, and it counts

And the majority of that offense comes from the top line and Simmonds on the PP. - aantny88
I understand that it's better to have some balance in the lineup. But the Flyers problem to this point overall hasn't been scoring goals. It's been preventing them. Specifically on the PK. |

I think when Raffl gets back, and I heard reports that he could be back Saturday. I'd like to see Raffl with Laughton and Lecavalier. And move Umberger to the 4th line. I think Raffl and Laughton can pressure the puck on the forecheck, and create some chances for Lecavalier. - MJL
I like the idea of Raffl and Laughton.
During the preseason I thought Laughton would make the team and he would be part of a really good bottom six two way line with Raffl and PEB. |

That was our point. We were ridding one bad contract and signed Vinny to a bad deal. It was a stupid move all around. Just cut ties and get younger. |

By the way: Steve Mason, after last night's amazing performance, is now eighth amongst starting goaltenders in SVPCT. He has now either played well in or absolutely been on fire for nine straight starts
It's gonna be tragic if they waste this kind of goaltending and Giroux's/Voracek's seasons, and I'm gonna be hard-pressed to understand how nothing could be done to improve this roster when I can think of three ways to do it just sitting in my office - AllInForFlyers
Maybe ESPN should redo their goalie rankings. |

We're going to win the Draft Lottery even if we are slotted at 14th overall. I feel it in the way the wind has been blowing lately. It's in the air all around us, you just have to listen. The slow chanting of the trees, "McDavid, McDavid, McDavid" - NickTheKid87

Yup. The positive is one guy turned in a super human effort, while the other 19 guys were along for the ride. |

Sure but never a trade. It was just a slip up in using the freed cap space after buying out Briere. Briere was going to go. He needed to go. |

The Flyers problem is that they have a multitude of problems. Its not just PK, or defense, or goalie... It depends on the night... |

Hartnell had a NTC so he also had to be willing to go to a team.
The trade was two players that had fallen out of favor with their teams for whatever reason.
the asset the flyers thought they were getting is more discapline, solid defense and maybe pop in 15 goals with a lesser length deal |

9 million per year tied up in these two. My god. I would have to look at the other rosters and cap hits, hard to imagine any team having a couple of sunk costs like these guys. - PLindbergh31
2 compliance buyouts really was and should be enough for most teams.
This team used its buyouts and then signed another teams buyout to a LONG term deal.
Can't make this stuff up |
