Glad they used the 7 defensemen so the forwards were nice and fresh for the 3rd period and OT.

One (or more) of those guys has to go. That offseason is going to be tight.

I think all three could be gone one way or another. Their fates could be sealed before Summer 2016 as well.

That would be a full rebuild when you include Simmonds, Coburn and Read in the list.

I heard they were close to a deal getting the very first pick last summer and it was turned down because Florida wanted Simmonds included in it.

Wayne is pretty highly regarded in the organization.

- Marc D

He is.

But I also see him a little of a niche player. Very good on PP and in front of net. I would prefer a more skilled winger to contribute more ES. Someone like Evander Kane. Plays a gritty style like Simmonds but I feel he has more skill.

Face it, they are just a bad team. One good line, a good goalie and thats about it.
- BiggE

Yup, I've accepted that. And if there was a season to be bad - really bad - it's this one with the upcoming draft class.

Play Umby and Vinny more minutes!

I hear ya, I just don't think they have the horses this season to do so.

Yeah, unlike 06-07, this at least is a good year to suck!

Definitely has more skill. I like Simmonds, appreciate what he brings to the team and look forward to him O&B for years to come, but take him away from the front of the net and he's not that effective.

I don't mind the 7 defensemen, along as those all 7 of those defensemen were, like, good.

Someone tried to make that point last night.

This team is definitely better than that 2007 collection of misfits.

This team is a Cup contender compared to that team.

I understand the 7 dman thing. They had Del Zotto, Coburn, MacDonald and Schenn all coming back from injury recently and wanted to make sure they were covered incase one had something happen during the game. They will be back to 6 wednesday night.

I am more frustrated that guys like Vinny and Umberger can't seem to do anything. Even if your not scoring your taught to do other things to get involved. Throw a hit, play strong d, get in hard on forchecck to create chances, bloc shots. It might not be your game but your still then doing someting to contribute.

No just one! Two more for Umberger, three for Vinny barring a trade beforehand.
- NickTheKid87

9 million per year tied up in these two. My god. I would have to look at the other rosters and cap hits, hard to imagine any team having a couple of sunk costs like these guys.

I don't want them to make the playoffs just to make the playoffs though, I want the Flyers to be a legit threat to win the cup. And they aren't. Sure, anything can happen once you get it, but still...

Contracts expiring after this season:
Bellemare
White
VandeVelde
Akeson
Timonen
Del Zotto
Schultz
Colaiacovo
Emery

after 2015-16:
Voracek
B. Schenn
Couturier
Raffl
Coburn
L. Schenn
Grossmann

after 2016-17:
Umberger
Laughton
Rinaldo
Streit
Pronger
Mason

I think it'll be the Summer of 2016 that will be when we see what Hextall can do. He'll have to decide who to re-up especially concerning the dmen. I'm sure there will be some other moves before then but not much money comes off the books after this year in terms of UFAs.

- NickTheKid87

And right there is why Homer must move heaven and earth to trade two of these three. Resigning them is a non starter, especially when Jake will be getting 6 plus, and B Schenn and Coots needing to be resigned at probably north of 4.

Keep dressing 7 defensemen, make other coaches jealous they weren't bold enough to do it themselves.

Pssstt... proven veterans.
- PLindbergh31

I think there is truth to this even though I know you are joking around.

Many of the old school coaches believe you would not be worth your salt as a coach if you didn't put your veterans first.

Pat Quinn was a great example of this. I heard them talking about him yesterday. It was during the playoffs when Pat was coaching Toronto vs I think Tampa. Toronto won game 1 with a lineup full of youngsters due to injuries. For game 2 the team doctor cleared 6 veteran players to all return at the same time. Quinn went with playing all 6 vets and Toronto struggled the next couple of games.

The coach being loyal to vets is a very strong and real thing. Even when the team is clearly suffering by playing them. It's very strange.

Exactly! If it comes down to that, like I said, I would rather have a top draft pick. What does making playoffs get you?? Unless you win, nothing. And they are NOT a cup contender with this team. Even if by some chance they make it past the first round, they are not winning the conference nor the cup.
