2) Wouldn't this be considered an IIHF event? If so, how does the NHL control broadcast rights? - jmatchett383
Love the international tournaments and seeing players I may not usually have a chance to see.
Not a huge fan of the NHL, and its marketing/money obsession entering the show. Assuming the Flyers miss the playoffs, Giroux, Streit and Voracek will be locks for their international teams. Have to figure Raffl and Bellemare will get a shot if their teams are in.
So its different from the IIHF World Tournament? Wtf - flyer_nutter
Yep, it's not the World Championships, which the IIHF runs around the time the NHL playoffs kick into round two. This is the World Cup, similar to the 1996 event.

It's the old Canada Cup. It became the World Cup in 1996 (fun fact: Canada vs. USA was first event at Corestats/First Union/Wachovia/Wells fargo Center). They had it because the Olympics didn't allow pros. They last had it in 2004. Worst-looking trophy in pro sports.

Oilers lost Saturday 7-1 to the Hawks.
Young rookie gets drilled with nobody coming to his aid. That organization is a mess and needs to be plucked. Similar to Calgary a few years back, and how the (frank) I wish the Flyers had obtained Giordano.

It's very similar to the Olympics.
Still trying to wrap my head around the 17 games.
8 teams, meaning 2 divisions gives you 12 round-robin games.
If you have just 2 semifinals games and the a championship and consolation game, that gives you16 games.
If you have 4 quarterfinals games, 2 semifinals, and a championship game, that gives you 19 (20 if there's a consolation game). - jmatchett383
Just need new division names. Checked on the 1996 one. North American division and Euro Division. NA one has US, Canada, Russia and Slovakia. Huh?

Do you really think effort is the #1 problem? - PhillySportsGuy
It seems like a problem.. Aside from the G line.
It seems to be a definite problem with Vinnyburger. I think a guy like Rosehill can come in and play a couple games and make more of an impact than Umberger.
He would play less minutes ( gives more minutes to PEB) and he would bring an edge.
Both are a bonus to this team

That was great. However, I beg to differ. The best hockey I ever saw (in person, thankfully) was the Canada vs. Sweden double-OT semifinal. Yzerman scored with less than 20 seconds to go in double OT. After the game, the entire crowd gave both teams a standing ovation. You had all the great vets from Canada (Gretzky/Messier/Coffey/Bourque/Sakic/Yzerman) and all of the relatively young guys from Sweden (Lidstrom/Alfredsson/Forsberg) and the skill on display for 100 minutes was flat-out amazing. I strongly suggest everyone watch it one time before they die.

Yeah, it was odd. They wanted to keep the rivalries alive, so they kept Sweden/Finland together and kept Canada/US/Russia together. The smart thing would have been to put Germany in the NA division so you had Slovakia/Czech Republic together.

Yeah, well, that is great. I didn't see it, so the best hockey I ever saw is still the 96 World Cup final. You cant beg to differ because you aren't me.....
I've seen it on here a couple times today, putting Raffl (when healthy) with Laughton and Lecavalier would definitely be a nice change. He's a good possession driver, speedy and defensively skilled.

For all the talk of not being able to move Vinny, I have to ask how the heck the Oilers were ever able to convince Dallas to take Shawn Horcoff. He's had a bad deal for a long time.

Dallas took the last two years of it. Not hard to dump two years

The NHL and NHLPA ran the earlier World Cup, I think. well, there are two teams of all-stars from nonselected teams. So Bellmare and Raffl would still be possible if France or Austria are not in. I'd expect Russia, US, Canada, Czech Rep, Sweden, Finland and then the two teams with all the Slovakians, Slovenians, Germans, Austrians, Swiss, the odd Frenchman, Belorussian, Lithuanian.

Horcoff is two years older then Lecavalier. Horcoff has just over a million on his cap hit then Lecavalier. Lecavalier provided 20 goals for us last season, Horcoff provided 20 points total. Yes Horcoff's terrible deal is done this summer but I don't understand why Dallas would willingly take it on to begin with, when they're a team in pretty good shape regardless.

Flyers next 6 games...
@ Detroit
vs. NYR
@ NYR
@ SJ
@ ANA
@LA
If Berube is still the coach come Dec 9, I'd be pretty surprised. That is a brutal stretch. Changes are a coming boys. - PLindbergh31
We're prone to singling out how bad these west coast trips look but I think they can split those 6 games. The wins will be a lot closer than the losses though. SJ and ANA are going to pound us.

For me it was the 87 Canada vs Russia 3 game final. Lemieux and Gretzky on the same line was just franking unreal!

I just saw the Raffl interview. We've played the last two games with 7 D. I'd rather get him fresh against the Rangers, I think he's so playing tomorrow. I really don't want to lose to the Rangers!
