Phaneuf insisted that the players changed a number of things in an attempt to turn the team’s fortunes around, and not saluting the fans was just one of them.

That's funny, cause when I heard that interview I was pretty happy to hear Dion repeat next question. This Toth guy probably just saw an opportunity to make a name for himself by trying to burn an athlete in a Simmons-esque way. 1) I would LOVE if the Leafs fans would respond by not showing up, or better yet, massively walking out. It is about time the overpaid babies realized who is footing the bill

2) Notwithstanding the above, I don't give a rat's ass whether or not the Leafs salute. It is a perfunctory, meaningless gesture anyway.

3) The Leafs are doing this to perpetuate an "us against the world" atmosphere around the team. (Pat Quinn was the master at creating this mood). They are trying to turn the negative energy into something that will galvanize them.
