I probably would have traded Coburn straight up for Dillon, to merge both topics of conversation.

If they flip Coburn for another defenseman instead of a forward who can drive play at ES, I will lose my damn mind

How is technically top 6 determined? Matt Read is 5th among Flyers forwards in ES icetime. He is 4th overall in total icetime among Flyers forwards.

Call him top 6, bottom 6, middle 6, 2nd string, 3rd string or any other label you want to call him.

Last season Read scored 22 goals to Simmonds 29 goals. Read scored 18 ES goals to Simmonds 14 goals at ES. Last year Simmonds scored 36 ES points to Read's 34 ES points. Now consider how each player is deployed, and the level of competition that each player plays against. But Read isn't a threat to score.

The poster I was replying to, doesn't view Read as a legitimate threat to score.

If Calagry or Vancouver are looking to make a move, I'd try for some package containing some of Klimchuk/Gilles or McCann/Demko/Cassels.
- jmatchett383

People keep thinking I just want to trade Read and Coburn for peanuts. Yes those are deals(above) are the ones i want. I want high end prospects. If a playoff team needs a top 9 forward and top 4 dman they better start with a first rounder and high end prospect.

If Vancouver came to me for Read and Coburn i am asking for 1st rounder and Virtnanen as starters. I would even trade with the Islanders if it got me Dal Colle and a 1st rounder

if youre packaging both of them? hell yeah. neither one of them are really on cost prohibitive contracts either.

I think if you were to trade Coburn because the Flyers are looking to move his contract for cap relief, prospects and draft picks, those are the deals you make either at the deadline when you feel we're out of it or the offseason. Steady NHL players normally get moved for other steady NHL players during the regular season regardless of what the details of the package are.

I've always said that I'd agree to any trade that makes the team better. Here is the thing with high end prospects. Sometimes they don't become anything more then that. So there is risk there.
And Read is the kind of player that is far more valuable to the team, then he is as a trade piece. I really don't think that it's fully understood what Read does for this team, and how tough that would be to replace. They've struggled this year, but that's a small sample size. But without Read and Couturier, this team is in the dumps.

That's what could drive Coburn's price through the roof -- he's signed for next year at a very affordable price for his age, and the Flyers just don't have to move him

These are deals I am talking about. Deals that help playoff teams but also provide the Flyers building blocks for the future to combine with our d prospects coming up

With the way defensemen are valued right now, I'd want a 1st and high end prospect for just Coburn if he's traded at this year's deadline.

Couturier and Read as a pair might be equally as important as Giroux and Voracek as a pair. This is my belief. I think Read's lack of offense is a concern right now but it's not impossible he can't snap out of it.

All this talk of trading Coburn because the Flyers stayed at 500 for a month is shocking to me. Okay, he doesn't put up the offensive numbers we would all like but it doesn't mean he isn't valuable.

yeah. i arrived late. i didnt really see what you guys were discussing. the first thing i saw was he dallas deal, and i was unsure as to why theyd do that deal.

obviously im a huge fan of read. i think people look and see that he isnt scoring, and forget how much else he contributes.

the dude isnt a franchise 50 goal winger or whatever, but he is a damn good player to have in the lineup. id love him. just not at the expense of maattaa or pouiliot.

If we were to trade Coburn for a first round pick to the LA Kings or the Chicago Black Hawks, my question to everyone here is, did we make that team better? I think we did. I ask this because I think we under value Coburn.

To me, it's less a reflection of his value on the ice, and more about the hard reality of budgeting for the future. One of the fatter contracts on the blueline needs to go in the next 12-24 mos... Coburn's the guy who's going to net you the good return. Of course, I would rather it be somebody else (cough, AMac), but it is what it is.

i think so. he wouldnt have to be a first pairing guy on those teams. he could just be a part of the mix, which he is more than capable of doing. great depth going into the playoffs. coburn on one of those team's second pairings would be huge.

That's it -- personally, I'd rather Coburn get extended. But it's not gonna be that easy, and they have drafted defensemen, and if there's ever a player who the Flyers will get to sell high on in the next 12-16 months, it's him

You know what? I think a pair of Coburn and Drew Doughty is a special mix of one Shea Weber. I think those two guys would be an impressive pair, much like Coburn and Timonen were...but better!

All the recent talk of trading Coburn and Read is just due to reactionary faction of the fanbase looking at a small slice of games, rather then the big picture.
- MJL

Speaking for myself, I'm not being reactionary with my recent posts about possibly trading Coby. My reasoning is based on his entire tenure as a Flyer and the outlook going forward given his possible future salary demands, his value in the marketplace and the outlook for the team's defensemen...but there definitely are a faction of fans around here that seem to to be quick on the draw in terms of wanting certain players traded, usually during a slump...I put Read in a different category than Coby and would be less apt to trade him. I believe he will play better and more consistent once he's out of the current funk. Coby meanwhile is consistently inconsistent imo.
