Dillon would have looked really good in a Flyers jersey. Demers is a good defenseman , but I like Dillon a lot

i like dillon from what ive seen. seems like they lost out on that deal to me.

You want to trade Coburn and Read for a 1st, a guy who's point production has regressed this season in the QMJHL, and the rights to a guy who may never play again? Yes, I'm saying no.

Now, if the return was Josh Morrissey or Petan + 1st, then yes.

But the deal you proposed is like offering a 1st, Nick Cousins, and the rights to Erik Gustafsson for a Coburn + Read package.

- jmatchett383

I like Ehlers. I know he isn't huge but Petan is only like a 5'9" center. Bother either way those are packages that I move Coburn and Read for. I am not saying i want to trade them for Matt walker and 4th round picks. The package has to be something that can keep building the Flyers

They're different types of defenders, but talent-wise it's a fair deal. I'm just not sure how it jives w/ the Stars' present needs.

He did this in the last game but it's few and far between imo. Actually I think Grossmann's ability to close the gap and stand opponents up at the blueline is superior.

I'm not a Coby hater, but he can be frustratingly inconsistent. When he plays with snarl and confidence, he's more of an impact player and earns his pay...the other 70 games he's kind of meh imo. I would think twice before re-upping his deal with a significant raise (as of after) next season. I wish we had seen his career arc continue along the path it appeared to be going in the first season or two after he got here...he looked to have all the makings of a 40 point, two-way/all situations D man. Not sure what happened to his offense. Some point to the puck to the face in 08 as a turning point, some think he was coached into a more defensive role...whatever it is, the drying up of that side of his game makes him a less valuable player.

- exlund

I'm coming around to the moving of Coburn. His next deal is the same summer that Voracek, Couturier & Schenn are up for new deals. He's likely going to command a salary that makes it difficult to work.

I think he's still a good defenseman, but he's not a guy that thrives when he's the main guy on a pair. You get him with a guy like Timonen and he's fine. Even when he was with Grossmann that one season, he was good, because Grossmann was very solid and did his job well.

I love Ehlers, Morrissey, just about every prospect in the Jets' system. But let's be real here... Chevy's gun shy about trading anybody... period. Can you really imagine him gutting the future of his team for a couple of late-20's guys who carry a combined $8M in cap-hit that would probably send the franchise immediately into the red?

I get what you mean, and I don't agree. I just thought the deal you presented was not what I would consider fair or even good value. Also, as for Winnipeg, their defense consists of Enstrom, Bogosian, and Trouba in their top-3. If worse came to worse, they could always move Byfuglien to defense. I don't think they're looking to make a major move for a guy pegged as, at best, #4 on their defense depth chart (when healthy).

Demers is better with the offensive game. Dillon is tough and has a nasty streak, but can make a good outlet pass and skates well

It would depend on where WPG is at TDL. I know Chevy is gun shy but if he needs to solidy things for the playoffs I could see him dealing. WPG needs a playoff appearance. If they are in the playoffs at TDL and don't make a move and miss out then he could be gone.

Trade winds blowing..

Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Jason Demers and a third round selection in the 2016 NHL Draft from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for defenseman Brenden Dillon.

- bgratch

I really don't see Hextall making a trade on Wednesday night when they have a game less than 24 hours later but Wednesday night to me was a sign to make a move. Three games in a row where they didn't show up at all.

Breaking down the roster though, there are guys you'd like to move but next to impossible to move. Next you have guys who you view as apart of the future of this club, so they're not getting moved. Than you have the guys who you MIGHT move but you want equal value for. I wouldn't trade Matt Read but if I did, I want a skilled guy around the same age in return. Matt Read to me right now isn't a guy you give up simply for cap relief, prospects and draft picks.

I know what he's done in the past. He has done well but Read is not technically top 6. That would be Simmonds and anyone on his line and the Giroux line. Couts and Read are a shutdown line... Not your traditional scoring line 1 & 2. I would never put Read on the ice over Simmonds when looking for a goal. Thats how I view it.

Anyways... I'm leaving work. Everybody have a safe and fun weekend and GO FLYERS!

- GOA88

How is technically top 6 determined? Matt Read is 5th among Flyers forwards in ES icetime. He is 4th overall in total icetime among Flyers forwards.

Call him top 6, bottom 6, middle 6, 2nd string, 3rd string or any other label you want to call him.

Last season Read scored 22 goals to Simmonds 29 goals. Read scored 18 ES goals to Simmonds 14 goals at ES. Last year Simmonds scored 36 ES points to Read's 34 ES points. Now consider how each player is deployed, and the level of competition that each player plays against. But Read isn't a threat to score.

And they just brought up some red-hot RH skill w/ Klingberg after dealing away Gonchar to make room for him.

Maybe Nill wants to go for a Red Wings-ish full-finesse blueline?

If Calagry or Vancouver are looking to make a move, I'd try for some package containing some of Klimchuk/Gilles or McCann/Demko/Cassels.

To be fair to Coburn, when he was brought in, he was being used on the second unit of the PP, which is an offensive situation. If we all remember, he was also doing pretty well next to Randy Jones on that second unit. Since then we've acquired Matt Carle, Andrej Meszaros, and Chris Pronger, while already having Kimmo Timonen. Once Coburn was long removed from the Power Play, we bring in guys like Mark Streit, Andrew MacDonald and Michael Del Zotto. I don't think we got upgrades over Coburn because he was bad, because the first little while he produced. I just think the club felt they could do better and they did.

As for Coburn in his own end. Right now I'm willing to let him play through like we have to with Lecavalier and Umberger. At least Coburn is coming off an injury. Since Coburn has been here, he's been steady next to Kimmo Timonen, Nicolas Grossmann and Derian Hatcher. I feel like the only guy he never stood a chance are carrying was Bruno Gerais. Easily the worst Hockey I've seen him play.

I don't think re-signing Coburn is going to take a big jump in salary. And I wouldn't trade him just because the Flyers don't have a #1 lead defenseman to pair him with.

i mean you can be finesse and still get the job done haha you dont have to be a hammering hitter in order to be successful.

i think paul martin may accidentally register a hit maybe once a month.

just keep the damn puck of of the net haha lehtonen is killlllin me.

Better said. Agreed. I'm just not sure if anyone in the league wants to part with a younger guy for Matt Read.
