I think it's a Chara reference, though I could be wrong.
- buffalofan19

Different circumstance completely so it makes little to no sense and I doubt there was that much thought put into it.

I look at it like this: Toronto was wallowing in mediocrity before they made that trade, and they are still wallowing in mediocrity. When all is said and done, they really were no better or worse off after making that trade. I consider a trade robbery if it actually makes a material difference in the win column.
- buffalofan19

Very unrealistic approach to looking at a trade.

The Leafs have an asset in a good #2 guy in Phanuef, Calagry is empty handed. Toronto got the better end, plain and simple

Lottery pick and 2 20 goal scorers, who are both under 27. That is hella tempting.

Simmonds playing with Z or Reinhart sounds damn good.

- ImThatGuy

Matt Read is an average 3rd liner. And is 28 years old. I'll pass on him.

Simmonds is an average 5 on 5 scorer, who gets most of his goals on the PP with Giroux/Voracek.

Myers would need to net a difference maker

I still don't ever see them moving him for a package. It potentially has the Phanuef trade written all over it. Calgary got what seemed like a haul, and it turned out to be highway robbery by Toronto

IMO if it happens, it's for a single top line goal scorer

- sbroads24

They did?

Mayers
White
Stajan
Hagman

Nothing then made me think that.

At the end of the day, all that says is that Toronto ends up with a guy that lets them feel better about themselves than Calgary does. The fact of the matter is that trade didn't improve either team's position in the standings short term or long term. Did Toronto get the better of the trade? Sure. Was it robbery? Sure, if you consider breaking into someone's home and only stealing the five-year old microwave "robbery".

Yea, they did. Stajan was viewed as a potentially very good 2C. Had 41 points in 55 games in Toronto the year of the trade and was 25 years old.

Niklas Hagman had 20 goals in 55 games before the trade.

So what is your point exactly? As long as the team we trade Myers to stays bad or mediocre the return doesn't matter? That's an awful way to go about it I'm sorry

IMO Phaneuf isn't the player he was 20-23.

He's a min eater and solid in his own end.

Nothing special and glad it isn't Buffalo with that contract.

You really don't think the trade of Chara, a guy who many lump Myers into a group with, was considered for such a comment??

No, what I'm saying is that if Buffalo trades Myers, and the return Buffalo gets doesn't improve their position, and the team that Buffalo trades him to doesn't improve from it either, both teams lose.

The purpose of every trade is to make your team better. In the case of the Calgary-Toronto trade, neither team really did, not significantly. It would be the same case in the scenario I laid out above.

Stajan had potential but never thought he was anything special. I did/do like him as a player.

Hagman was a journeyman that never had more than 42 pts up til the trade and was 30. Nothing special.

Mayers was a 3rd/4th line guy.

White IMO at the time was the best player but again nothing special.

3 guys that are out of the league now.

In this situation that's a bad way to look at it.

The Sabres could waive Myers and they would still be a better team 2 years from now barring a catastrophic event or events.

By your logic, as long as we say are better than the Flyers 3 years from now, it doesn't matter the return. That's just not true, especially given our current situation

But "not improving" isn't always the equivalent of "losing." It might just result in a "status quo."

EDIT: I'm sorry. It's a slow day and I just realized I'm getting bogged down over stupid semantics on a irrelevant hypothesis. I surrender.

This is the exact same situation you laid out when Ehrhoff was bought out over the summer. If you ultimately end up with a better team after the move is made, it doesn't matter.

Fair enough, but it definitely doesn't become "robbery" in that case.

Apples and Oranges.

There was a risk with Ehrhoff, and he didn't want to play here. He was 31, Myers is 24.

There isn't a need to move Myers. If you move him, unless you get a great return, it's an epic fail on Murray.

You really don't think the trade of Chara, a guy who many lump Myers into a group with, was considered for such a comment??

- stashu

No. I don't actually. I think it was a knee jerk insult from the peanut gallery with zero thought put into it. Chara couldn't skate. In fact he was by far the worst skater I've ever seen in my life and at the time was not projecting in any way shape or form to be the player he was/is today. Most people forget that or just don't know. The 2nd or 3rd overall(can't remember what it was?) was the main jist of that trade(which turned into Spezza) along with Bill Muckalt as a throw in. Not that I'm defending the trade in any way nor was I. I've never seen Myers lumped into a group with Chara and if he was why would you ever even think of trading him?

From all accounts from what I've read on this thread and elsewhere by Sabre fans is Myers is a legitimate first pairing defenseman in the making if not there already which is not the same circumstance. Again, comparison isn't a good one even if it was the intention which I don't believe it was. Also, how does it make any sense whatsoever to say "so we don't make the same mistakes you guys did" when I'm asking why would you trade him. That would only make sense if he said "we are not going to trade him so we don't make the same mistakes you guys did"

Actually, that's why I'm against moving him at this point. I don't think any team gives a return that makes this team significantly better, not at this point.
