Wonder if it was like Gregory Campbell in the 2013 playoffs where he fractured something? Not necessarily broken but fractured slightly

If I were a betting man, broken/fracture Tibia/fibia...Good call...

Here's a short primer:

1) LTIR can be used for players that will miss 10 games AND 24 days;
2) Placement of the player on LTIR does not remove that salary from counting against the cap;
3) Placing a player on LTIR only provides relief if teams payroll begins to exceed the upper limit;
4) The amount of relief earned is limited to amount of overage, less cap space prior to the move

This means the amount of relief provided by LTIR doensn't necessarily equal the injured players salary, but teams will often make procedural moves (like calling Johns up) to ensure they get as close as possible.

Basic Example (purely hypothetical):

If salary cap is $70.0M and Blues have a team salary of $69.0M on the day a player with a $4.0M cap hit is placed on LTIR. The Blues are now eligible to spend up to a new upper limit of $73.0M ($69.0M + $4.0M).

However, if the Blues had recalled a player with a $750K cap hit prior to the LTIR designation, increasing its payroll to $69.75M, it would be eligible to spend to a new upper limit of $73.75M ($69.75M + $4.0M).

If they had recalled 2 players with $500K hits prior to LTIR move, increasing payroll to $70.0M, they'd be eligible to spend to a new upper limit of $74.0M ($70M + $4.0M).

The Blues could then immediately send the two $500K players down and would have the ability to add a cap hit via trade of exactly $5.0M.

It was Block...

McNEILL INJURED IN ROCKFORD LOSS

Mark McNeill suffered an apparent right knee injury late in the second period of Rockford’s 2-1 loss at Milwaukee on Saturday night. The 21-year old left the game just prior to end of the middle period and did not return. The severity of the injury is not known as of this writing.

McNeill had dropped to the ice to block Viktor Arvidsson’s shot. Arvidsson’s shot appeared to hit McNeill on the inside of the right knee. McNeill was immediately favoring the leg, though he did get up and finish his shift. But he did not return for the third period

Sorry for pasting something here from the third man in....but I really like Block and his stuff...hope this isn't against any hockeybuzz rules..if so just lemme know and I'll erase it

- captainserious

I stand corrected.

I know he was favoring his right side, and he absorbed the shot within a few few from where it was shot. It looked like it headed into his ribs, and the guy in front of me thought the same thing.

Thanks for the info.

I think I've gone cross eyed again. HAHA. Thx
- John Jaeckel

Long story short: Once you've determined your player will miss required time, it benefits you to get as close to the cap as possible before moving your injured player to LTIR.

I had guessed at the time that this was why the Hawks called up Stephen Johns - his $800K salary got them closer than Dahlbeck ($613K), Svedberg ($620K), or Cuminsky ($600K).

Once they placed TvR on LTIR and were afforded the incremental cap overages, they can send Johns down, and call up the guy(s) they want.

Here is where the Hawks are now
$1,778,830 cap space after Johns was sent down
That includes $925,00 LTIR which if I have my numbers correct the Hawks got within $71,170 of their cap ceiling before relief came.

- Cup-Bearer

CapGeek says they were within ~$30K of upper limit, which makes sense. If they had $70K in space, I'd question why they didn't call up McNeil/Danault ($863.3K) instead of Johns ($800K) to get even closer to the limit before LTIR'ing TvR.

This will be a big test for Clendening.His point totals are down from last year is this due to him being more dedicated to playing good D?I get the feeling that if he doesn't show something he may lose his spot in the depth department.

If Clendening is supposedly "dedicated" to improving his game in his own end, I haven't seen it. The offensive decline could be related to the quality of the players around him in Rockford. I'm not really worried about Clendening's numbers. The offensive prowess is still there. It's his play in his own end that scares the living daylights out of me.

I've got a feeling that this call-up might be about showcasing him.

That crossed my mind as well. Let's hope that he does well. It will benefit everyone if he does.

Hmmm. Respectfully disagree. In the couple games I says in Texas, I thought his defensive play was impressive, especially with the wide poke/sweep check. Needs to get stronger and put on weight, that was fairly abundant right of the bat.

You've seen him more than I have. However, I feel he's light years ahead of Johns who has a loonngg way to go before he sniffs the big show.

Very bold move on a long Western road trip like this.

I'm with you though, from the couple games I've watched him, he's been awful in his own end. Not a good thing for a team that scrambles to figure it out in the D-zone

Four months from the 20th is March...soooo....that freakin sucks
I take it Clendening is going to play a bit, show what he's got, and then shipped out with Morin and perhaps a pick or other prospect for a lower line lower salary type player..and then we'll probably see Klas up with the Hawks

I think Sharp will eventually get dealt but I'm sticking to my guns and saying Seabrook goes first and it happens this offseason. I don't see the Hawks signing him to a long term deal and I'm not even sure with all the cap rumors for next year that they could even if they wanted to. Also I'm not sure it'd be a wise move either because you're looking a 7-8 year deal for around $8 mil for Seabrook.

The question that has been bugging me is the following:

Why would anyone take a cap/team-friendly deal when they know Toews and Kane "got theirs?" Knowing those guys are on tap to make $10.5M each, if Seabrook can fetch $7M or more on the market, why would any fans expect him to agree to a discounted deal? If I were that player, I would be pissed off if someone expected me to give up "mine" simply because the guy calling the shots with the purse-strings to the bank gave over 1/3 of the cap to 2 guys.

Wonder how Hjalmarsson feels now? Eating pucks every game and probably underpaid by about $2M a season.

Wasn't someone like Ladd unhappy about the preferential babying that Kane got when he was shipped out of town.

Im sure there are others on the team that are aware of Kanes antics at times and arent the most thrilled with it as is. Let alone bowman sitting down telling them they need to take less to cater to the rest of the players on the payroll like you said

Just hard to think of those other guys that are also mighty good in their own right that will never get anywhere near "full value" if they wish to continue to play for the Indianhead.

Seriously, what man is his right mind would think, "OK I'll be a 'good soldier' and take a few mil a year less" when they look across or next to them and realize there are 2 guys that didn't have to do that?

If the cap doesn't go up, 88 and 19 will have to consider the fact their contracts have handcuffed the club -- yes, they will have #2 and #81 around but they are both getting older, especially Hoss. The rest might simply be a revolving door of guys who, once their existing contract is up will move on and a guy with an ELC will be moved into place. And then maybe 1 or 2 vets added around them.

It depends how much Seabs could get on the open market and who that team is vs what the Hawks can pay him. If for example the Panthers can pay him 7m and the best the Hawks can do is 6m would he leave to go to the NHL equivalent of Siberia with little chance of winning a Cup let alone even making the playoffs?

I thought I read (probably on JJ'S blog) that Ladd wasn't happy with the leadership of the team. I wouldn't think that refers to Toews but who knows.

Great tweet from Mark Lazerus...

"Today is Patrick Kane's 26th birthday. He's got two Cups, a Conn Smythe, a Calder and a massive contract.

When I was 26, I had a cat."
