Outside all the female doging, that play Hayes had where he drove to the net from behind the red line and dangled through a couple players before getting a shot off was great. This kid is gonna be dirty by the trade deadline. And even dirtier 2-3 years from now.

I am starting to see what everyone see in him. He's learning the NHL game, and fast.

Agreed. The refs are just plain terrible. I never liked the two-ref system and I really feel it adds to the inconsistency to plays like you speak of. Today, you just never know what the hell kind of game is going to be called.

Back when it was one ref, there was a distinct personality to how the game was called based on what ref you had. From Stewart, Fraizer, O'Halleran, to Shick. When your game had one of those guys calling the penalties, you pretty much knew what game you had better play and knew what you could get away with. This was accepted by not only the players, but the fans as well. Personally, I loved Stewart, Kerry Fraizer, Dan O'Halleran, but not Rod Shick when the Rangers were at home (he always favored the calls for the visiting team); and I despised Don Koharski (Rangers never won with him officiating the game). But the game had more personality and consistency in the officiating for each and every game.

I tend to agree. I always remember Ron Hogarth being brutal on the Pens, bu pt that's going way back. I also remember that Kerry Frasers hair NEVER moved.

The kid has some great offensive instincts and great defensive instincts. He creates a lot of turnovers and has nice poise with the puck on his stick. He sometimes loses control from trying to do too much in the offensive zone but that one play in particular I was talking about is a play I think he tries to mimic a lot and usually loses the puck but if he can control it like he did tonight he will be a dangerous player. The confidence seems to be growing every game. Should be a great player a few years from now for sure.

A few points from Carp's post game that makes me feel a little less insane

4) And while I, again, don’t blame anybody for how it ended—because they got it right—some of the stuff that happened during the game was pretty poorly officiated. Though, I must say first, the officials made the correct non-call on Evgeni Malkin’s hit on Dan Girardi, made the correct penalty on the Chris Kreider breakaway. Made most of the correct calls all night, though they missed a few (Malkin’s spear on Carl Hagelin. What bugged me most was the refs allowing Sidney Crosby to intimidate them. He yapped at them at the end of the first until they warned him, with a whistle, to leave the ice. Later, when he didn’t get a call, he slammed his stick against the glass while hollering at the referee. No call.

5) Crosby is the only player in the NHL who can show up a ref like that and not get called for it. So @seamusmcduff tweeted me, asking what Paul Stewart would have done. He copied @PaulStewart22, and when I replied that Stewie would have slapped him with a two or a 10, Stewart replied “I tossed Gretz. Mario and Yzerman when they pushed it too far. Crosby would be no different.” How great is Stewie? That’s why, even though he was a character and perhaps a bit liberal with the application of the rulebook, I think he was a better referee than the one who was inducted into the Hall of Fame this week.a

11) As for the Malkin spear on Hagelin, I can only imagine what the Pittsburgh media might have thought if the roles were reversed. I also wonder what would happen if it was Dan Carcillo who banged his stick on the glass, or if it was John Moore who speared Malkin. And I wonder why Hagelin doesn’t take a dive after the spear and force a call to be made?

All in all we need to stop going to OT so much and coming through in big spots, the OT PP is still irking me, too cute as usual

I Posted something earlier last night about missing the refs of the good ol days when it was a one ref system on the ice. They were like the players - individuals with their own personality that everyone knew and came to expect come game time. They added their personality to the game and how it was called.

Sadly, the refs today (and of recent times since the 2-zebra system started), there is no personality from the refs; except sucking. Additionally, I am not sure I could name more than one ref that calls the games; and that may be pushing it. I could, though, start naming the refs from 20+ years ago easily. I remember as a kid either my father, brother, or myself would ask each other who was officiating the game (and be going "oh crap" or "phew...ok"), but today nobody asks anyone because they are all terrible.

The officials are on the ice the entire game. They do matter for the NHL to put out a great product.

Off topic, but I saw Brendan Halverson last night in the Plymouth Whalers/Grey Hounds game. Its only one game, and the first time I have seen the kid, but he seems really, really solid and smooth. Made some really good saves, although the Grey Hounds laid waste to Plymouth. Obviously, it's going to be a real long time before he sees the Rangers' net (if ever), but the Rangers might have a real good prospect with this kid.

If one of Halverson or Shesterkin turns out to be an ace then we did pretty good, so far both are showing potential

They compared Halversson to Mason when he was drafted. He height, puck moving ability seem to make it a good compassion. Although I don't think he'll ever be as athletic as Mason. Mason also makes himself bigger in the net. So those are some things that Halversson can work on.

Good points all around. I don't think real hockey fans would disagree with any of it.

You know, I've only see him play one game, so there isn't really too much you can take from that other than an initial impression. But, one of the things that I noticed was that he seemed real big I the net, plays a little deeper, and has real quick pads. Made a lot of pad saves. Also, real smooth -- not a herky jerky movement type guy, but real fluid. This is his first full season manning an OHL net, so we'll no more by the end of the year, especially with his team really having a chance to compete for an OHL title (if anybody can beat Erie).

Probably not happening. Also Halversson has a late birthday. So he'll have I think 2 more years of OHL eligibility left. Not sure though. He should get a long look for Team USA next year, he maybe the 3rd goalie this year. This year is odd for team USA, they usually always roll with a 19 year old in net, who has a late birthday. This year the two best tenders they have are Demko and Nedeljkovic. Demko turns 19 right before the WJC starts and Nedeljkoiv turns 19 after it ends. Should be fun.
