Berube was asked today after practice what Scott Hartnell brought to the team and whether he is missed by the club. Chief's response was blunt and then he softened it a bit so as not to come off as ripping Hartnell.

"I don't know if anything is missed. I mean. he's a good guy. He did a lot for the team and the organization. We all like him from outside the hockey rink to on the ice. He's a good player and good in the room. But people move on that's the way it is. I have nothing against Hartsy and he's a friend of mine," said Berube.

Last week, after Raffl got hurt and VandeVelde was briefly put on the Giroux line, Ron Hextall said, "In my opinion, even last year, Raffl was the best guy we had on that line to play with Giroux and Voracek."

Interesting...

Well it was smart they started Schenn on the top line then

I think this act needs a third stooge.

I think they would have if he was just a FA signing. The fact that they parted with so much to get him would have made that a tough pill to swallow.

I think they also thought they could get away with it for a while because they can say he's just the checking line center and hes not meant to score a ton or provide much offense.

The Voynov situation makes it much worse now though

- PhillySportsGuy

yeah. i understand their rationale i guess. and i mean even if they carry around an anchor, they still have 2 cups to show. so it wont cost people their heads.

but just viewed alone in a vacuum, its going to be a disaster.

Ray Ferraro shredding Mike Richards on Toronto radio.

http://www.tsn.ca/radio/f...-speed-vs-bruins-1.133438

It's after McDavid stuff. Talks about how Kings were gonna buy him out, but he promised to come to camp in top shape, and has been big disappointment for LA, and now they have cap issues.

Jeff O'Neill said he'd be good trade target for Leafs and Ferraro shredded him

- Jsaquella

Richards was never the most skilled player and his offensive numbers early in his career were inflated somewhat by the openness in the first few seasons following the lockout. It's not surprising that his production has dipped but it is a shock out how much it's dipped. At least LA got the two Cups with his help, making it all worth it but I bet now they wish they could part ways with him for the future. That contract is scary long. Makes me grateful he was dealt.

I think Tomorrow should take what they can get down the middle. Mike Richards eating McDonald's daily is still better then anything they've got.

I wouldn't say disaster but they definitely missed an opportunity. It may hurt down the line when they need to start extending those real good players that are on bridge deals or ELCs

For sure. Not ideal by any means. Winning two cups in three years I would think would soften the blow for the fans.... I'm sure if we looked at every roster we could find a few guys who are being drastically overpaid. Guys age, and sometimes don't live up to the back end of their contracts.

i wouldnt want to inherit that deal, even if bare minimum assets were required to get him.

i think he still has some use. but long haul, it will be detrimental to a team.

- stayinthefnnet

He's not a bad player, but there's legitimate questions on whether he's worth the money and term and if he can produce at an acceptable level if he's moved to a top six role.

I'd hate to be a GM and take on that cap hit and term and not be sure that he can produce.

I'd rather have Bozak than Richards, at their respective cap hits and production levels.

There's also lots of guys out there if they're interested in a guy at a cap hit near $6mm

yeah. i think he can still be a useful player for the next 2 years or so. but for that money and that term, its going to become a heavy cross to bear.

Sure but at the same time nobody in that line has a record/resume of winning or real success. They lack serious leadership and experience in the locker room. The Toronto Maple Leafs have been OK with what they can get and what they can do for along time.

True. But why pay a premium salary for Mike Richards, who has been outscored 136-124 by Bozak over the last 4 seasons, in 29 fewer games, when you can go out and target a guy who has a record of winning and recent production?

Hell, come July, Brad Richards is a UFA, Id rather pay him $5.75mm for 3 years than carry Mike Richards at $5.75mm for five.

EDIT: Now, if LA is willing to eat $2.5mm of Richards' cash for the next 6 years and trade him to me for a 4th rounder, great, I'd roll the dice on it.

averaging 8916 per game. sheesh. what is sad is the Isles are averaging 13,071 even with their hot start. Guess people don't think they are for real
- nastyflyergirl

Well, and they're moving to Brooklyn. So I'd think the STHs wouldn't be lining up for the last season on the Island.
