What's the big deal? The most successful league in the world is probably the English soccer league...and they all do it.

I think in large part, a lot of teams have truly classic sweaters and it is a tad disturbing to think that they could end up bastardized by companies. Imgine the Maple Leaf replaced by Tim Hortons, or Bostons emblem replaced by Dunkin Donuts... not exactly classy.

I'm sorry but it is already here.

RBK is on his pants, jersey, stick, gloves and Helmet.

I think you are referring to the advertising that is on the European jerseys. But I think it would end up being closer to the CFL Jerseys

Ehhh...I think after a while it just becomes part of the uniform. Manchester United switched sponsors this past year. Hence their uni's look different. It's been accepted. I used to think the same thing about these "hallowed classic" logos. But their just logos, which haven't ever done anything to help me. So go for it as far as I'm concerned. Maybe if they do they'll only raise ticket prices 5% instead of 10% for next season...

The rangers generate $51M a year from ticket sales...thats selling out MSG's inflated ticket prices for 41 regular season games. An advertising deal on their jersey would generate most likely between $30M and $50 a year on its own (estimating based on what soccer teams generate). The NHL would be stupid not to do it.

Yeah, I'm sure NHL teams will use the logos on jerseys as a reason to be less greedy on ticket sales .

If you want to look at the jersey logos that way you can extend it to the teams and sports in general. A hockey franchise is not going to physically help you with something, but you still follow and cheer for the teams.

All those sponsors splattered on the jerseys is exactly why I think soccer uniforms look so terrible. Not a reason for me to want the NHL jerseys ruined in the same manner.

The entire blog being in bold was a mistake. I have no idea why that happened. The one sentence was supposed to be bolded, but there was some kind of error and since I edit the blog in a different screen, I didn't notice.

My apologies.

Let's protest!!!!!!

Dear NHLPA,

I love NHL hockey to the core. I played until my equipment was stolen at 17, I named my 1st born child after my favorite team, The Sabre's.

I recently read that there would be advertising coming to NHL jersey's. If this is true I as a fan feel it's time for me to step in and ask the N.H.L.P.A. to help me organize a protest.

When this time comes I would like to see the players use a generic jersey with just their names and numbers. Much like their practice jerseys.

This is the fans league and we want to roar and let Mr. Betman, the governing board of the N.H.L. and all the owners that we the fan have control of the leagues,we are the sole proprietor of what every sports league needs to survive.

We do not want advertising on our sacred uniforms.

Thank you

i agree. the idea of anything other than equipment companies logos being on the gear and jerseys makes me sick. perhaps the league ought to consider placing teams in appropriate markets that will generate real business first instead of seeking to patch deficiencies with advertising. just a thought.

Everyone thought you were yelling at them.

For anyone old enough to remember, we all thought it was ridiculous when they wanted to put ads on the rink boards, and on the ice, (we thought they would never do that).
Nothing is surprising, if they can make a buck on it, they will.

Cant really blame them for that. Who says no to making money? To be fair the Canadian dollar was struggling and may continue to so that could be another reason leading to this decision. I personally dont like it.

I get it. And I hate the idea of it. It would suck and ruin jerseys. But from a business perspective, it makes too much sense.

ads on the jersey, meh whatever we will just learn to accept it in time, like the numbers on the helmet, seemed weird when they first did it, now its whatever.

i would be more upset if they changed the Trophy names since it seems unnecessary, do it once and where does it stop...renaming ever 10-20 years.

If they rename the Norris to the Orr, Why not rename the Conn Symthe trophy while they are at it, are they goign to name it the Patrick Roy trophy since hes the only 3 time winner? Now that would cause an uproar

They're gonna rename the Norris to the Tim Horton Exceptional Defenseman Award.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with advertisements on jerseys. Nothing. It's very good for business and resistance is futile.

Also, once again, it is a business. It doesn't owe you jack poop.

They actually do owe us something. Without fans, they don't have advertisers and the players are making no more money than I make at my day job.

The league - if it wants to - can operate with respect, dignity and integrity. I don't owe anyone anything either, I guess, but I still chose to live my live by those principles.

I think unchecked, fanatical greed is a huge problem. I get that its a business, but if they want make more money, then put out a better product and charge what the market dictates.

Also, I wouldn't bet against the market falling completely out of the advertisement industry as my generation continues to age. Because here is the thing: As someone born in 1982, I am among the first people on earth who have been advertised and marketed to since birth.

I mean, don't tell the NHL or their sponsors, but I sometimes watch three games in a night and if you quizzed me afterwards I couldn't tell you a single board or ice ad. I literally am almost blind to them.

I plan on writing about it probably this sunday, but I do agree that changing the names of the awards is a joke.
