Thing is, when Berube initially took over the team couldn't score to save their lives. He had them playing such Neanderthal defense heavy hockey that the pucks didn't start to go in until he loosened it up a bit. Not a fan.

You gotta give Berube a break there though. The team had been so used to playing pond hockey under Lavy that it was pretty much basic instinct to tighten things up.

Well it has nothing to do with being right. Both are infinitely better then Gustafsson. Gustafsson was a finesse puck moving offensive defenseman that wasn't very good at it.

for all of the leeway that schenn gets when its repeated how young he is, and how he isnt a finished product, and he is still growing, it is difficult for me to see how that wouldnt apply to gus as well. in fact, given the type of game gus plays, it likely would require even more seasoning. (which he wasnt really given).

then considering the way the flyers as a team have assembled their defensemen, i think that taking a chance on gus would have been a better fit, as his skillset fills a greater need.

I'd gladly replace either of them with Alt for the cap relief and because, from what I've seen, he's capable of playing adequate NHL hockey (based on preseason, reports, interviews, and AHL play).

exactly. i know there isnt a glut of goalies available, but there also isnt a huge market for teams looking for older starters either.

his money is in line with what someone else would have offered. and like i said, its a win/win. if you wait and he earns it, the team likely benefited from that with a great run. at the very least, you plunk down a tad more for peace of mind. a worthy insurance policy.

But seriously, I wasn't. I played like Rob DiMaio, but on defense. I played like Nick Grossmann but with the body of Mark Recchi. Never put up high point numbers, and was a defenseman who played defense (a crazy thought, I know). I'm sure my CORSI Rel. was terrible, even though I was team captain for 4 straight years.

yeah. ultimately, if fleury performed well in the postseason, and thats the route they wanted to take, the deal works.

there are a decent amount of youngish tenders out there serving as backups or understudies that could probably be acquired fairly cheaply, like you said.

regardless, all of these plans/comments have merit, further cementing the fact that there was zero need to jump into the pool this early.

He's a transitional coach. Like Bowa for the Phillies was. They come in during the "valleys" and are fired just before the rise starts. This would probably be Berube's fate regardless of whether he was on a level with the better coaches in the league.
