That's only 3 lines. Curious as to why you omitted a line? Rhetorical, I already know why.

Why would they want 3.5M of dead cap space?
- MJL

Because Leier on the Flyers at 4.25 could very well be a better option for the organization than Umberger on the Flyers at 4.6 if they dont think Umberger fits into their NHL lineup next year. You can sign a UFA that is bringing what Umberger is bringing for under a million

Having Umberger is basically like having 3.5 million of dead cap space right now

I'm not too concerned about Umberger over the remainder of that deal. Over the next two years Ghost, Morin and maybe Hagg will be coming in and replacing guys at a fraction of the current cost of some of our D men. MDZ should be pretty decently priced as a RFA too.

They're not going to bury Umberger and keep 3.5M of dead cap space. They'll try and trade him or buy him out. But they won't do that.

The season is not 15 games old.

What has Blair Jones done to be put back in the lineup over Akeson? He's worked so hard and competed so hard he found himself on waivers.

it makes ZERO sense
why waive jones and keep akeson if you'd rather play jones than ak

If Del Zotto keeps playing well and improving at the rate he is, he isn't going to be that cheap.

The Devil you know vs the unseen nightmare

I think that's what we're seeing. The salary cap era has definitely had some unforeseen consequences -- teams have traditionally valued young players on ELCs just because it's common sense, but pre-cap era and even early cap era, you'd still see young players move and maybe a bad contract for bad contract scenario

Remember when a still-young Daigle or Pronger could get moved? Or an in-prime Teemu Selanne for damn near pennies on the dollar? Or Keith Tkachuk?

It's just not like that anymore. Teams hold onto assets for as long as they can, and they hold onto them for dear life.

For example: There's no good reason that Keith Yandle is still in Phoenix. They have a legit stud in Ekman-Larsson, significant needs in their forward corps, and have a bunch of talented defense prospects.

In the old days, Yandle would've been flipped for a foward and pick or prospect. It would've happened two years ago, at least. Maybe three.

But in today's NHL, that move doesn't happen. It just doesn't happen like it should.

They waived Jones because they were more confident that he would clear. I think it says a lot about Akeson and how he's played and practiced, that even though they have a scoring line spot open, they decided to play Vandevelde there and put Jones in the lineup, and still scratch Akeson.

Hopefully. One small difference is that Del Zotto will still be an RFA after this year, so that limits his leverage. But his next deal if it is a multi year deal, will eat into his UFA years, so that will raise the cost.

Part of it is a lot of GM's don't want to trade a guy who provides good value on a contract. Some GM's overvalue their own guys. There's a million reasons that the trade market gets stagnant. The cap doesn't help.

Huh. You do? I need to see a bit more. Didn't love it against Florida, and I haven't watched the Edmonton game yet. Did it work last night (though, against the competition, I'd still say that the jury's out, whichever way they looked)?

Seems like the GM and Coach have differing opinions on the player. The GM doesnt want to expose him to waivers

Yandle hasn't moved because I doubt Phoenix has really been trying to move him. Defenseman are at a premium, they may have been listening, but in order to be willing to trade him they want a kings ransom in return. Which is the only way they should be willing to trade him.
