Many maritimers refer to Newfoundland as part of the maritimes and vice versa. I don't ever recall a conversation were anyone would say the "maritimes & Newfoundland" everybody just says the maritimes.

In NS we used to say Atlantic Provinces when we wanted to include NFL. Maritimes was exclusively NS, PEI, and NB.

I did some quick reading about why NL is not considered a maritime province and the reasoning was stupid.
I'm glad to be a prairie boy and don't really care if that lumps me in with those inbreeders from Saskachewan.
