Looking at the cap situation next year, we're not going to have a lot of opportunity to improve the team if the cap doesn't go up considerably.
Joensuu (or equivalent bottom 6er), Petry, Fasth (or equivalent goaltender) are UFAs needed. Even if Petry is gone, that's probably about 500k up from last year.
Yakupov, Schultz, Arcobello and Marincin all RFAs. You gotta figure Yak will get at least a 3 million dollar raise, Schultz maybe another half a mil, Marincin probably a mil. Arcobello if we keep him would be about a million raise. That's 5.5 million added, charitably.
With 6 million added, we're down to 3.2 in space. We would still need a #7 dman, a replacement/upgrade on Petry, and we'll have not touched our centre situation. With Perron, Gordon, Purcell, Nikitin, and Scrivens hitting FA after 2015-2016, we'd also not have a ton of flexibility to re-sign most of these players.
It is my contention that 1-2 of Purcell, Pouliot, Perron, Eberle, Yakupov, Niktin, Ference will have to be cleared unless the cap goes up by 6+ million. We should clear them soon before we're in a bind. |

I can't see Yak getting 5.85 mil+ on his next contract. |

For cap purposes, according to capgeek, he makes 925k |

I believe his bonuses count against the cap though and that is 2.85 mil. |

Full elc. But yup his next contract will be full cap. So even at 4 mill that's a 3 mill cap increase. |

It was always my understanding that any top-5 pick's cap hit was set around 3-3.75 mil. |

Bonuses used to count against cap. They don't anymore but count on the bonus cushion next year. |

I figure Yeti is likely swamped at the bar tonight so we could probably get away with plenty in here tonight... |

has Nikitin been that bad? Ference is useless although he is a good source of leadership. Even though he's an A$$hole. |

In all seriousness. Its great to see all 20,000 fans at the joe chanting "Gordie! Gordie! Gordie!" for 2-3 minutes for him after a quick announcement of his health, all while holding "Get well soon, Gordie!" signs. |

hmm.
This is very confusing, and of course all I have to go off of here is what Capgeek's tool indicates - Yakupov's cap hit at 925k, removing or inserting him effects the space by precisely 925k.
I'll look more into what's going on with that, but in any case I thik Yak gets at least 4mil |

Nikitin's been injured. And a mixed bag. On one hand he's a huge guy who can comfortably posess and shoot the puck and be deployed in a bunch of situations. On the other, he's made some bad decisions and his back seems to radically effect his skating.
As someone who's been interested in bringing him in for the past couple of years, he's made me look like a chump but then again I wanted him here at 1.5-2 million cheaper.
Mostly, at 4.5 in cap and salary for one year, he's fairly moveable next year. |
