People always talk about the Detroit model.

There's some truth to the theory that holding onto your homegrown talent pays off. Leaf have none because everytime someone starts to get good they (frank)ing trade him. So no. Let's grow out draftees. Don't touch any of them.

LA moved their homegrown Simmonds and Johnson and they got 2 cups out of it.

San Jose has moved on from the likes of Setoguchi and Coyle for other pieces. It's not all done by sitting on mediocre draft picks. kadri and gardiner I don't think fit as core pieces.

Eric Staal will not waive his NTC.

He had discussions with Peter Karmanos, Ron Francis and Don Waddell over the summer and discussed his future as well as the future of the club.

He has publicly said that unless there is new ownership that wants to change the direction of the team, he doesn't want to leave.

Peter Karmanos wants him on the team. Francis wants him on the team (we think), Eric Staal wants to stay on the team.

He's not being traded.

We do have a lot of homegrown prospects in the minors right now that I do believe the leafs will try to use them in the the future. I like Kadri. There is no doubt he will be a top 6 forward in this league for a long time but you just don't pass up this opportunity to get a package like that. It fixes quite a few problems

I could relate to that, but allot of the time, we just don't make great selections, while drafting. Biggs is a bust, but Percy is so far OK. Kadri is right around where he should be, for a 7th overall. We aren't sure about Nylander yet, because he hasn't had a chance to play at his highest level. He's a decent pick, for where we drafted him, 8th overall. I would have preferred Nick Ritchie, but it's roulette, when you get to that stage of the draft. I would like to get a shot at Dylan Strome this year, if things go badly, but the Leafs hierarchy will have to decide the direction that this team should be pursuing, after Christmas. All I know, is that we have no decent centre prospects, in the whole system, and we are lacking leadership overall. Maybe a trade of the proportions of a Kadri and Gardiner is in order.

That take Leafs straight to contender?

Kessel-Thorton-JVR
Lupul-Bozak-Clarkson
Santo-Vermette-Leivo
Komagod-Carrick-Winnik

Phaneuf-Yandle
Rielly-Robidas
Percy-? (Granberg)

hmmm..still not there

You forgot Polak.

I believe we'd be in a better spot and definitely get the best player in both deals. It's worth the risk. besides, if need be in a year or so Thornton can be moved in his final year to a contender as I'm sure he'd want a cup.
Yandle too. better chips than what we got I think.

Yandle is a keeper. The only reason he is expendable is because of OEL and all there great defensive prospects. If we got Yandle I would hold onto him as long as I could.

LA has a TON of great homegrown talent. Sure you can cut a guy or two loose once your are at that point. San Jose has never won poop so it kinda furthers my point. I think Kadri is a fine player and he's homegrown. Wether you like it or not he is a part of the identity of the team. Leafs didn't draft Gards so I don't care.

Sure. Because Carolina with Connor MacDavid and Marc Staal is further from a cup than TO will be next year.

Maybe you change the deal slightly. Take out Kadri and offer Bozak. You would have to add something to that deal to make it work. Lupul might be someone that could be dangled, as long as another asset comes back the other way.....say a second rounder.

Yeah, Arizona will likely only want offensive forwards
