This bloded portion is 100% incorrect. The GM determines the roster, healthy scratches included. The coach is the one who decides who plays and who is scratched. So it's 100% on Berube whether he sits Ghost or Manning.
- jmatchett383

No it is not 100% incorrect. Berube will only decide if Gostisbehere plays for the Flyers. Berube doesn't decide if Gostisbehere sits as a healthy scratch on the Flyers roster game after game. So if there is a worry that Gostisbehere will just spend time in the press box, that's on the GM, not the coach. Because the GM can easily remove Gostisbehere from that situation and send him back to the AHL if the NHL coach won't use him in NHL games. Simple common sense,

No, I understand what you're saying, but the way you said it is 100% wrong.

Emery has played very solid. But he has hardly ever had to go east to west in his crease and when he does... Its an automatic goal. Mason has faced unstoppable shots on a regular basis. The team has played much better in front of Emery. I love that Emery is playing solid but Mason is far and away the better goaltender.
- GOA88

I think your discrediting Emery and it's much smarter to ride the hot hand, especially when you look at the opponents Emery has faced. This idea that because Emery isn't as quick east to west hasn't hurt the team so far and it isn't an automatic goal. This idea that Emery isn't facing as quality of shots is a fantasy.

If the coach decides he's not going to play, then the GM steps in an removes Gistisbehere from that situation and sends him back to the AHL. So if it becomes a situation where Gostisbehere is not playing hockey, that is on the GM. The NHL coach only decides if he plays in a game for the NHL team. He doesn't decide if Gistisbehere doesn't play anywhere.

This is all well and good, except for the fact that you said the GM decides who plays and sits. You're wrong quizkid.

I'd rather waste my time watching Pharmaceutics lectures than arguing with you.

So I'm going to go watch pharmaceutics lectures.

It made sense but was worded in a way that could be misconstrued. He meant playing in general, not just in the NHL.

Then he needs to explicitly say that. He said the GM decides who plays and who doesn't. That is not true. Whatever roster he is on is decided by the GM. The coach of that roster decides whether or not he plays. At no point can the GM decide if the player plays or not, he can only assign him to a different roster.

You're right I shouldn't have included plays in the wording. But where you we're incorrect is worrying about Berube. Berube only decides if he is in the lineup for the NHL game. What happens with ostisbehere overall is on the GM.

Hopefully

I agree with how he's been used. I'm on the record as saying that I believe. But he would not be used correctly if scratched.

- Giroux_Is_God

Berube has 100% power to decide who plays in the NHL and who is scratched and Hextall has 100% to demote and promote. From Hextall's comments to Ghost (telling him not to try to do too much or be the savior, just have a good experience) and Berube playing minimal and extremely sheltered minutes (plus PP time) says to me that both the coach and GM are on the same page. Regardless of the power each wields, they have a mutual agreement on how to handle Ghost.

I thought the AHL coach made the decision on who plays and who sits on the AHL roster, and the NHL coach made the decision on who plays and who sits on the NHL roster. Guess the GM decides that.

I think he was assuming that Ghost would play in the AHL if demoted. Which is true. So Hextall has the power to decide whether he plays hockey (by demotion) in the event that Berube scratches Ghost. As far as how clear this was, I'd say it was the Jersey Shore's ocean water and not the water you see down in the Caribbean.

Outside of being big and strong, Manning is also more known as a defensive defenseman. Two very different types of players. Maybe Hextall and Berube feel they need something different for tonight's game?
- SuperSchennBros

Brandon Manning had 8 goals last year in the AHL and I'm pretty sure Manning plays the point on the PP for the Phantoms.

I don't think he's Bobby Orr, but he's certainly not Hal Gill. Manning could probably spot play on the 2nd PP unit on the point and do just fine.

That's fine. Hextall can put him in a position where he is much more assured of being placed into the lineup. However, the power to place the player in the lineup still rests on the coach, not the GM.

No doubt about that. There's a .0001% chance Ghost doesn't play in the AHL though unless he's injured. But technically it's up to Murray and not Hextall to put him in the lineup.

The AHL coach can certainly decide who will be in the lineup for an AHL game. But do you think that Gostisbehere is going to go down to the AHL and sit in the press box? The issue is some are worried that Gostisbehere is not going to be used and scratched by Berube, and stunt his development by not playing the way a player like Sbisa was in the past. If that happens, it's on the GM. If Berube isn't going to play Gostisbehere, it's the GM's responsibility to remove Gostisbehere from that situation and send him back to the AHL.

That's a decision for the AHL coach, not for me on Rox Hextall.
