nah he was 2 strides behind the whole way

...had to check the video but to be more detailed. He sauntered towards the Bruins zone watching Franson charge in on the pinch. He should have recognized that Franson was pinching and moved backwards towards Krecji. The puck came loose to Krecji and they were pretty close. I've seen Phil skate faster chasing a goal then he did chasing Krecji. It was lacklustre.

I will say that DP's decision to stay with his man was even more bewildering though.

Isn't he continuously one of the highest scoring in the physical testing though?

He may be out-of-shape or just over-used... he did play 20min against BOS the other night. As per Friedman's article, Kessel is one of the fastest (edit: top speed, not acceleration) players out there, believe it or not.

From Friedman's 30 Thoughts on Oct 23rd:

15. MacKinnon beat three-time Olympic short-track speed-skating gold medallist Charles Hamelin in a quick race set up by CCM. How much burst does Colorado’s tremendous forward have? A company called PowerScout hockey is starting to track both top speed and acceleration through a computer program that uses three cameras set up around a rink.

16. The sample size is small (one-to-six times per player), but growing, and PowerScout (for business reasons) won’t allow its videos to be posted. The data I did see was compelling. MacKinnon was not one of the quickest accelerators (Alexander Ovechkin was first among those tracked, followed by Erik Karlsson, Ryan Kesler and Taylor Hall), but only Carl Hagelin had a faster highest speed, at slightly above 37 kilometres per hour. MacKinnon was tied for second, with Phil Kessel. (You can see some of that information here http://i1.wp.com/www.powe...Acceleration-graphic3.png)

17. Not yet public is tracking indicating how much a player skates at a pace above 20 kilometres per hour. I saw a little bit of that information. Only three men stayed at that speed more than 40 percent of the time with at least 10 minutes of five-on-five play. They were Hagelin (44.2 per cent of 13:36), Sidney Crosby (42.4 of 19:19) and Joe Colborne (41.7 of 12:29).

I'm not sure that Kessel is the one anybody should be pointing fingers at - but hey, you can make your own mind up!
- A_Tree

When anyone on the team starts doing the things Phil can maybe he'll change til then the last thing they should be doing is challenging or modelling their game after Phil.

They got me in a weigh lose thing, here at work,,, I figured why not donate $2 per week to the winner. I have been the same size for 30 years. I started 4 weeks ago at 196.4. I weighed in today at 196.4... I doubt I win.

If you're interpreting this as "its all Kessel's fault" then you're not the stoic pine tree I've always envisioned.

Phil doesn't get a free pass when it comes to playing a team game, making smart decisions, and bringing a total effort. Too many Leafs think they get a pass when it comes to one of those items.

I'd be a lot more pissed if he was coming off most shifts NOT gassed.

He's skating. Could he be fitter? sure, but it isn't the problem. He's plenty fit when he's on a rush.
