They have to like who they draft.
Leafs management seems to follow the "Grass is greener" model. Combined with a "Who wouldn't want to play here" confidence. - Woderwick
It's worked well so far so why change it? |

Can't believe that after looking as bad as he has Kessel still has 10 points... imagine if he didn't eat donuts all summer??
Kadri has 2 points... - Hockey_Reverend
Kadri played well last night. He and Lupul trying to make the most of their opportunity to play with one of the leagues best offensive forwards. |

The trouble with that system is you can have LA winning the first over all pick with Chicago picking second with the Ducks picking third and a team like Toronto, Buffalo and Carolina with the 30th pick. How does a bad team get better that way.
I would go along with part of this system though is giving an equal chance to all teams who miss the playoffs. - sparky
It tells those teams to man the (frank) up, like Calgary have done. It tells the teams, you'd better come up with a way of finding decent players lower in the draft to improve. Edmonton may have picked all their prospects in the 1st round. After the 1st, nothing. It's like they tanked, but could even be arsed to scout anyone. That's proper lazy. To intentionally tank, and then pick up the Hockey News on the way to the draft.
I'd assume if LA, Chicago, Ana get the first three picks, one of more of their current lineup will be available for trade. Mike Richards? Muzzin? Clifford? Beleskey? Kreuger? All those players would improve Buffalo's team.
The main change it would make is in philosophy and actually bring more integrity to a league that, everyday, seems to be losing it. Why should a team like Detroit never get a top 3 pick, while themselves, having no real shot at the cup, just because Holland and Babcock demand accountability from their players? |

Then why not go all the way - abolish the draft.
With a salary cap in place, one team couldn't sign everyone.
Would be fun to watch.

Yaaaaay! I was trying to decide between Desharnais and Boedker for my Utility slot last night because Tarasenko was listed as down with an illness. Then Tarasenko is back to active, slot him in, BOOM hat-trick and an assist! |
