So, we're 7 games in. What's your guys' take on Steve Downie so far?

Love him with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

This isn't good. I hope he can make a 100% healthy recovery from this. Praying it's not cancer. Health first hockey second.

Sounds like they caught it early, and they are pretty optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

Actually not uncommon but much more common in women. They usually remove the thyroid and put the person on thyroid hormone replacement therapy. I think he will be OK.

Maatta has cancer? That is some super depressing news. I hope he comes out ok. He has such a promising career.

Yeah it does sound like they caught it early but that's still no guarantee that it won't be gone/won't happen again down the line

Unbelievable news about maatta. First letang with a stroke, and now maatta with a tumor on his thyroid. I'm glad they caught it now, it could have been much much worse. Maybe if maatta wasn't a professional athlete, the normal family doctor would have missed it, and it could have been life threatening.

Apology accepted.

No problem with fun from time to time, but that was just very lame. You wanna make fun of Crosby next and call him a girl for missing time with an ankle sprain and a concussion? How about making fun of Mario for missing all that time because he was whining about his back pains?

Obviously long term health is the important thing, but seeing what a freak Maatta is, there is no way that he's out for 4 weeks.

Four weeks to get back into playing shape after this is a bit optimistic, I think. My mom had this done and she couldn't even walk for a week. Granted, he's a professional athlete and I'm sure there have been advances in thyroid tissue removal recently, but I'm be skeptical about that timetable.

It says he's going to continue playing for the rest of the week and has known about it for 3 weeks, still playing grade A hockey. What a warrior

I hate to hear stuff like this but the thing that surprises me the most is that he's so young ?! I wish him the best and hope he comes back soon. Of course he's averaging 20min a night 😭... There goes our leverage to trade a dman, at least we have enough to cover him for however long it is. Most of us take our health for granted every day, good health is not a given, it's a gift.

So only girls get injured? I just don't get why you needed to call him a girl.

Not certain I agree we can't get a good hockey trade done with Maatta out. All this means is that we're not going to trade Martin (hopefully) while Maatta is recovering. Whether that be for the projected time period or, God forbid, the season. I hate analyzing this like that, as I have lost people to cancer, but as a fan its tough not to think of roster implications.

Maatta being out doesn't make our log jam at defensemen magically disappear. If we have a trade in the works for one of our prospects, whether it be Despres, Harrington, Dumolin, or Pouliot, it should still get done.

If He has thyroid cancer, it is extremely treatable and not life threatening. My wife was diagnosed 12 years ago, and has been cancer free since then. Yes, you are right they put you on a replacement regiment, and that's where the balancing act takes place. It takes some time to get the adjustment correct with the meds. I am wishing #3 all of the best, and speedy recovery.

With Maatta out for 4 weeks, you bring up Harrington and let him play top 4 minutes. Might as well let him sink or swim in a top 4 role during a part of the season that is pretty much meaningless. If he shines, it gives you options once Maatta is healthy to move someone for top 6 help.

I don't fully disagree, but I think they should at least wait and see how surgery/recovery go before making a major move on defense. God forbid he's out for the season and they move a guy, then you're a bit screwed.

Injuries happen. It's not like he chose to get injured. Hockey is a physical sport after all. And Bennet WILL be great offensively. Who else in our system is close to him minus kap? He has more offensive talent in his toe then anyone else in our system.

Because it was just very childish is all. Again, not saying you can't have fun on here or be sarcastic or make fun of players, it was just very 12-year-old AOL Instant Messenger grade or, worse, TSN comment grade.
