Lol...there's no real forward to get from the Flyers anyway...at least one that they would part with.

From the Flyers? I'd go for Read. Throw in Scuds/Dumoulin on the deal

I hope PHI called good ol' JR and he shat in the other end of the phone.

Not that it would ever happen, but I would hope he asked what they wanted for Simmonds before sharting in the phone.

I honestly didn't think there were many valid points, I mean especially where he says Crosby is a non-factor when he plays poorly, which in my opinion is false, when Sid does play poorly he often takes frustrating retaliatory penalties... but so does Geno. I tend to recall Sid having a nice "Controller disconnected" GIF made of him, much like Ovi did too. I just don't think singling out Geno is fair, I tend to think much of his points aimed toward Malkin can also be aimed towards Crosby. If anything, maybe Sid should be more under the microscope, contracts shouldn't be the issue in my opinion, the C on his chest should be. In the article he says Sid "isn't that kind of captain," well, isn't being the captain an changing responsibility, on and off the ice? Every player has lackadaisical shifts... I dunno, I just feel like he's been targeting Malkin ever since he started spewing the "should have traded Geno and kept Staal" garbage... and I'm not attacking Sid or Geno, I enjoy watching both of them play, but I think most of his points can go towards both players as well.
- j.boyd919

He carries a blind eye towards Sid. So I get your points.

I do agree with him however that Malkins floor is much lower than Sids. Both have bad moments, as do all players. But, Malkins are more frequent. He feels that shouldn't be happening so frequently for $9.5 million. I agree with that premise.

Makes me sick to imagine people thinking "we have to trade Malkin". He's not the problem, he's the solution.

Accountability and Leadership is all we ask for from our main players.

I would think all of these teams were talking about (LA, BOS, PHI, DAL, MIN, DET, TB), except maybe TB, have a real need for a guy like Martin. Sucks so many are in the east but nonetheless....Bidding war commence!

No Martin on the deal....

Martin alone or Scuderi/Dumoulin. Pick one and give us Read (or if they prefer, B.Schenn)

Why does trading Malkin come up after every time he has a mediocre game?
- YouMeAndDupuis9

He's an easy target.

People fall back on the traditional lazy Russian stereotype.

Madden has been suggesting it may be the way to go for a while now, even when 71 has had good stretches.

I've always wondered how long the Pens would stick with the cap hits of 87 and 71 producing no Cups for multiple years. We're going on season 6 since they last won anything.

Maybe it's fueled by this Madden guy. I suppose he's been pushin for this for years. The one time I listened to him was shortly after the cup win. Turned on the HD radio on the Pens site to see what they had on during the off season and it was Madden. I listened to him babbling for about ten minutes on why they should trade Malkin then I had enough. Never went back. When you can see that someone has "I love myself" written all over them while they're on the radio, that's pretty bad.

Just checking cause thats way too much for Read haha. Even then I wouldnt give up Martin alone for him. Good player but hes too similar to guys like Spaling and Sutter. Good third liner who would be less than average in the top 6. It wouldn't offset the loss of Martin enough, imo.

I'm all about top 6 or at least top 6 upside in a Martin deal...

I agree. Martin's a great player, but I don't think any team besides bottom feeders like Florida and Buffalo can justify giving Martin 7 mil. 6 sounds good for a veteran's final big time pay check. Its a good fit for both teams.
- Victoro311

So do Martin for Nino straight up, free up $2.333M in cap space. Then maybe try to trade for Sekera ($2.75M rental) via a combination of 2 prospects (Matt Murray, Archibald, Megna, Samuelsson, Dumoulin, etc...) and maybe a 2nd rounder depending on the quality of the prospects surrendered. This would essentially cost us $420K extra replacing Martin with Nino and Sekera.

Replacing Martin with someone trustworthy in the Top 4 would be a necessity.

The cap hits for those two are going to look better and better throughout their contract. I can't believe I'm even entertaining this but I would only move Malkin if it included a young superstar +. Like Mackinnon, ROR and Mcginn for Malkin, Sutter/Martin. For the simple fact that you get many more years out of Mackinnon. Even then you will eventually have cap problems. No way the Avs would ever do that so back to why the whole concept is stupid to me.

I've grown tired of watching Crosby turn towards the refs with his hands up every time he gets hit, looking for a penalty. Just keep playing. He already has the reputation as a whiner, and I guarantee those actions aren't going to buy him any more calls from the officials.
Especially since our volatile power play will cause refs to whistle fewer penalties, not more. So Sid being upset with the lack of a call will happen more often rather than less. He has to keep playing through that; he can't let the other team and/or a blown call by the ref take him out of a play/game.

For all those who don't want to raise a yellow flag or panic because "it's too early" remember this: teams not in playoff position by Thanksgiving in recent years do not make the post season. Currently the Pens are 5th in division, and 11th in conference. The points earned in October count just as much as the points earned in April. The 3 points they have frittered away already this season will come back to haunt them at some point, especially if the shoddy 3rd period efforts continue.

Don't agree with your last statement because I personally think we have enough blue chippers to distribute and handle the workload and be only slightly less effective.

I would probably do Martin for Nino. Sekera would be a nice get but hes likely a more expensive rental than that and it depends how the young guys are looking.

Yeah, I was trying to think what we could offer Carolina for Sekera...I guess it really comes down to whether he's going to re-sign there or test the FA market. If he's doing the latter, they're going to have to get whatever they possibly can for him. And yeah, my initial proposal probably isn't quite enough but after seeing what some UFAs went for at last year's trade deadline, it's not too far off.

18.2 mill per year will still be a lot in 5 years. The Cap aint going up much more in coming years. See this past off season as the first example of that. Revenues are flattening. Currency values. Etc..

Final piece of evidence...they are considering expansion again. That equates to huge expansion fees.

Boychuk trade hurts now... But 4-6 weeks is survivable. We'll see how well Rask can carry that team.

Packaging Scuds with someone to Beantown for Reilly Smith would be a fun day.
