I'd do it. Trade the Schenns for picks, clearing $6.1mm. They currently have $1.48mm in LTIR exemption space, which gets us to $7.58mm. Trade Lecavalier, eating $2.25mm or half his money and you can fit Malkin. LTIR MacDonald & Coburn and you can fit Alt and Manning.

and what happens when amac and coburn come back? assuming they can get a proper diagnosis for a change?

i think ultimately jake will have to go. and i dont think cooter will be part of the long term plans then.

I think Coburn and Kimmo were the only dmen on the roster to have never been reviled by their previous fan bases. Even Pronger had his moment in the crosshairs when he asked out of EDM.

I'm sure two of the three Thrasher fans were getting impatient with Coburn too

Send Alt and/or Manning back down. Dumping the Schenns & half of Vinny allows me just enough room to fit Malkin

And when Coburn and AMac return, trade Grossmann for picks and bring Alt or Gostisbehere or Manning up

im not trying to justify, at least consciously. i just know how jmatch in particular feels about the subject, and was trying to come up with something more interesting than the standard hypothetical.

i personally dont think the pens need to trade malkin for depth. i really dont think they need a lot more players onto the roster. yeah the fourth line is pretty bad but it is on a lot of teams. what team couldnt use another top 6 winger? they just basically need the guys they currently have to play better. which admittedly in the playoffs, they really havent.

and i took away the caveat because i figured it would be too easy to just say yeah well take him for nothing, then trade him and just get a huge influx of assets at no cost. had to make it interesting in some capacity haha

i ultimately figured hed say just no to inheriting malkin, which is consistent with his stance.

Well, a player like Malkin of course you take him. Personally I like teams with a killer 1-2 punch at Center, and even though it really hurt me to say it, cited Crosby-Malkin as an example.

haha i guess i better check capgeek next time before hand and come up with some more challenging parameters. to be fair, i was also considering vinny as an immovable.

I could have him shot and clear the entire salary, but I'll eat half of it-the Flyers could have traded him if they were willing to do so. I'd be willing to eat half to fit Malkin

This is a big test for Alt. I don't want to over dramatize one four-week(ish) sample of games, but this is the kind of extended look that could really help (or hurt) his career.

There were teams that would had taken him. They just wanted the flyers to pay part of his salary. Flyers didn't want to

yeah. giroux either stays captain or goes. i dont see a scenario in which he stays as anything less.

and damn you i thought this was intriguing enough in its own right without needing option 4.

- stayinthefnnet

Haha, it's interesting for sure. You'd never get fair value for the moves you'd have to make, even if you did it in the offseason. I don't have anything against Malkin. But for the past 5 years, with your 2 superstars, you haven't won a game past the second round. So I was just thinking that the "best insurance policy in the world" scenario may need to change. The difference is, for the Flyers, Giroux is not Crosby. But the Flyers problems run a lot deeper than lack of top-6 wingers and bottom-6 depth. The Flyers are not in a win-now mode.

It must be a litmus test the Flyers use to see if the potential acquisitions could survive playing here... how comfortable are you with constantly wearing the goat horns?

Haha, I thought about it. But last time I proposed a theoretical trade of G for 2015 #1 pick I got killed for 2 days. And that was based on a sound premise...that by the time our young D matures he'll be in his early 30's.

Absolutely. If he can establish himself as a legit top-6 defender, he gives the team some options moving forward, and becomes the first of the 6 horsemen of the apocalypse to fit into place:

Ghost - Sanheim
Hagg - Morin
Alt - Unnamed 6th player

i dont view malkin as an insurance policy. i view him as just a 1a 1 b kind of thing. regardless, i do agree somewhat, but disagree somewhat. i think the pens do have the pieces in place for the most part. they just need to play to the levels that they should. which they havent done.

love the guy, but the biggest cap albatross to me on the current roster is fleury.
