It must be a litmus test the Flyers use to see if the potential acquisitions could survive playing here... how comfortable are you with constantly wearing the goat horns?

You can throw Umberger into that pile too

Absolutely. If he can establish himself as a legit top-6 defender, he gives the team some options moving forward, and becomes the first of the 6 horsemen of the apocalypse to fit into place:

Ghost - Sanheim
Hagg - Morin
Alt - Unnamed 6th player

- jmatchett383

Honestly, even putting aside the 25 year contracts the team has with some of the current vets, I think you'd like see at least 2 vets on the squad with your top 4. And that is assuming the best case, that all four of them truly make it.

Haha, I thought about it. But last time I proposed a theoretical trade of G for 2015 #1 pick I got killed for 2 days. And that was based on a sound premise...that by the time our young D matures he'll be in his early 30's.
- TheGreat28

The #1 pick has played 0 NHL games, scored 0 NHL points, and therefore has proven nothing to say he can be a superstar at the NHL level (however likely it may be). Shea Weber, on the other hand, is a perennial Norris candidate.

However, the main hurdle in the Malkin proposal is salary cap clearing, which this trade actually inhibits.

Might be Gostisbehere who gets the call. He's scratched for the Phantoms
- Jsaquella

I trust you, I'm just curious. Source?

EDIT: NVM, just saw Panotch tweet it. Brett Hextall also a healthy scratch, looks like

giroux is the number one reason i think its just an absolute killer to have to wait 3 or 4 years.

i know defenders are hard to come by. but i still think a top flight 90 point center is the hardest asset in the game to acquire. you have that already.

malkin hypo aside, i would nut up and try to acquire that 26 27 year old dman now, even if it cost coots.

i dont view malkin as an insurance policy. i view him as just a 1a 1 b kind of thing. regardless, i do agree somewhat, but disagree somewhat. i think the pens do have the pieces in place for the most part. they just need to play to the levels that they should. which they havent done.

love the guy, but the biggest cap albatross to me on the current roster is fleury.

I could have told you that 3 years ago.

3-4 years, 3-4 first round picks... there's probably going to be a couple of really good forwards in there that ought to be ready to go too when the D come out hot from the oven. G's not gonna have to pull the tractor himself.

G won't be a 90 point player in his 30s but he'll still be productive. Flyers are so good at drafting forwards in the first round. I have faith that they'll be able to bridge the gap. It's not like the forwards on the current roster are pushing 30

tempting, but for as much as i love hank, i dont think i would.

honestly, i really think i dont want to invest money in a goalie.

it may just be a flavor of the week notion i have, but ive been mulling over the notion of rolling with a khudobin type guy for cheapish. you can get league average goaltending for 2 mil. and just heavily invest in the team in front of him.

Yeah, but as Bill said earlier, nobody is trading top 2 defenseman. It's just not gonna happen. You have to grow from within.

I just don't think the flyers have enough depth at forward to trade Couts. They'd become a 1 line team

If you could trade a pile of assets (2015 first, 2016 1st, B Schenn, Morin) for the 1st overall this year, would you?

Agreed. If it's a matter of salary dumping, you find a way to keep him.

You know, it's funny. I hated the Morin draft pick, mostly because I wanted a more mobile guy. But with Sanheim and Ghost, Morin becomes much more valuable to the team.

So now, he would be the showstopper in that deal. Even if he is not in the deal, two things to consider. First, that 2015 pick could really be top 10. If I could get Strome or one of the other top centers, I wouldn't do it. At that point you're better off with 2016 and trading B Schenn for another winger, instead of McDavid.

second thing - I don't thing the team that wins the lottery trades him.

I don't think the trade him either, but I think that's the kind of package you'd have to give up to be in the conversation. And yes, you're likely trading a high 2015 pick.
